gen 3 camry. trying to make up my mind on whether i should put splits up the front or just standard 6.5 inch 3 or 4 way speakers.

i was at the shop today and there is a world of difference between splits and standard speakers. i knew that already, i just wanted to remember (last set of splits i had was about 10 years ago).

my dilemma is: i don't want the interior to be affected by speakers. i don't want to see ugly tweeters sticking 2 inches out of my dash or mirror covers.

i've seen people mount them flush on the door trims, but is this a good place to have them? (acoustically)

is there somewhere else that i can put them that will be not so noticeable? any suggestions or pictures would be greatly appreciated. otherwise, i might just end up going for standard 6.5 4ways to replace the OE door speakers.

Slightly at a tangent, do 3 or 4 way speakers actually sound any better than 2 ways anyway?

BTW, I'm also in Brisbane :D

Well I liek yourself hate seeing tweeters sticking out. When I installed my flushmounts I put 'em in my door panels. Don't know what it does acoustically though. Mine could swivel so I just swiveled them up and back towards driver/passenger. Don't knwo if that helps acoustics lol.

Or you could find door panels that had the tweeters stock in them and swap them out. I guess that would be harder though.

hi mate. it depends on the brand. i like the pioneers 6.5 inch 4 way that i listened to this afternoon at autobarn. there was a very small difference between them and the pioneer 2 ways, but since i can get the 4 way model on ebay for just a little more than the 2 way at the shop, i figured i could go for the 4 ways. they're $200 at the shop and $140 on ebay (new. can't remember the model, i have it written down in my office downstairs).

a good set of splits will cost around $500, and i don't mind coughing up that kind of money for good sound, but i don't want them to wreck an interior that is not that pretty to look at in the first place. so my question remains.

Just for reference there it is. If for some reason you could find them then maybe u'd be able to swap out just the handle part.

Yea I would say your choices are the door, mirror cover or pillar.

That's a nice setup "G" I like that 1.

Mines are sitting on my dash because I ran out ideas where to put them, but I'm going to try to have mine setup like that!!! Pretty Cool:thumbup:

thanks dna59, i'll look out for those door handles and see if they're interchangeable.

thanks for the pic RedPhoenix, it looks like there's gap between your tweeter and the hole you cut out. i guess i could also try that and i guess i could always get replacement covers easily from the wrecking yard if i stuffed mine up.

Personally I would flush mount them in the A pillars (the plastic trim that runs down the side of the windshield).

Depending on the depth of your tweeters they may not flush mount, but you can take care of that with some body filler and/or fiberglass. In other words go custom. ;)

Play around with the position of the tweeters and see what sounds best to you.

As for components (2 way or 3 way) vs. a 3 or 4 way coaxial, I'd go with components. I highly suggest using a amp on them.

Or you could just get the armrests with the tweeter spot built in? it's about 7-10 screws and that's it. I just picked up 2 door panels for $30 at the salvage yard.

Nope, power window's/locks. I didn't think they ever made crank windows in a Gen 3. Either way, i would imagine you could just switch the arm rest part, not the whole panel.

just got back from the wrecking yard. they had lots of camrys but even the ones with the upgraded sound system don't seem to have those handle mounted tweeters like they do overseas. i'll keep looking around.

i got myself a dash clock though, which seems to have been an option here... go figure. hooked it up and it's all working ok :)
