Personally I would flush mount them in the A pillars (the plastic trim that runs down the side of the windshield).

Depending on the depth of your tweeters they may not flush mount, but you can take care of that with some body filler and/or fiberglass. In other words go custom. ;)

Play around with the position of the tweeters and see what sounds best to you.

As for components (2 way or 3 way) vs. a 3 or 4 way coaxial, I'd go with components. I highly suggest using a amp on them.
Listen to this man, he knows what he is talking about.

Here's the thing with sound. What you have to compare stuff to is basically a stock system, so pretty much anything is going to sound better the closer you get to "appropriate" positioning. Appropriate positioning is usually common in two places, kick panels in the foot well (to equalize pathlenght difference; you usually put both the woofer an tweeter of the comp set here though some just put the woofer there), or another place would be what 88 mentioned: the A pillars at ear/eye level (this is to improve imaging making it seem like the music you are listening to is coming from out on the hood of the car). I'm sure you can achieve just as good or better results by experiementing, but these two locations are typically the defaults.

Other locations like the ones mentioned (sail panels or even high up in the door panels; i've seen people mount them in their dash and reflect off the windsheild) do work, as everyone has different taste in sound, Get some double sided tape and play around with what sounds good in your car.

Cars suck acoustic wise. Their meant to get you from point A to point B, not sound like a concert hall.

With proper positioning what your trying to do is minimize the pathlength difference between the right/left speakers and your head/ears. Your always going to have some pathlength difference, but the idea is to minimize it.

In other words, if your sitting in the drivers seats, the left speaker is closer to your head/ears then the right speaker. This is the pathlength difference I'm talking about.

Theres also things like time alignment.

Placing the tweeters high up also brings up the soundstage. Your ears are more sensitive to high freqencies and can pick up on their location better then lower frequencies.

thanks mate, i guess what i'm trying to do is determine whether this is all worth the trouble or not. i have decided to go ahead and install tweeters on my A pillar panels, so i'll get some spare panels to play with and see what happens.

i was going to get a couple of 15 inch subs but someone outbid me on ebay, so i've decided to keep the 12 inch alpine type-s and today i took the time to tune the head unit properly (there are so many settings in this thing!!!) and i managed to get some amazing results (i guess you gotta put the effort into these things).

now, what would be a good set of component speakers to get for around $500USD ? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i'm not up to date with the current stuff out there.
