I currently have a frontier which I'm selling because I'm wanting King cab as called in frontiers (access cab) you guys, and I want a 6SPD.

I never really looked into tacoma's until now because I do like them, but I don't know much about them. They do seem to be similiar to the frontier (Have a 07)

So why should I buy one VS getting another frontier?

I'd be on the market for a access cab, 4wd, 6SPD. 4.0L

For you guys with the 05+, manual, 4.0L, 4wd...

What are some options you guys really like about yours?

What do you have about it?

Why would you recommend it?

Which year 05/06/07?

I'd be using the truck for 4-wheeling as well as pre-running, which lifts are best for the tacoma? (price/amount of lift)

Anything else would be great!

I guess somebody has to be first. I have an 06 4wd V6 6spd manual access cab TRD Off Road.
I will be the first to say that TOYOTA kicks all others ASSES!!! Can I say that?
All mudslinging aside, nissan is also japanese and they are good too. tacomas have their issues and so do frontiers. the manual trans is the biggest complaint. it shifts/feels a little funny but once you get used to it most people like it. it's unique. some of us also have some rattles that come from the manual trans. no one knows exactly what it is, apparently neither does toyota. other than that i love my tacoma.
nissan- the frontier and xterra are basically the same underneath so bear with me. the xterras have really bad rear diff locks. they are a piece of crap and many of em break. i'm guessing the frontier is the same in that regard. i have a friend with an xterra 6spd and he loves it. i've also seen frontiers in another forum with a rear squeaky suspension.
it's all in what you like and need. i would suggest taking each for a 24hr test drive. the dealer should also offer to let you drive it for 24 hrs and see how you like the vehicle whichever it is.
good luck.
GO TACO!!!!!!
oh ya, did i mention that toyota tacoma has owned the mid size truck market for a long time? this means lots of demand for aftermarket toys for our toys. more than you'll find for a frontier.

Thanks for the responses so far, still looking for some more.

I do have a frontier now.. I was asking why I should switch. What are the problems besides the transmission? Any interior rattles? More advice would be great!

Oh, also hear Tacoma has better cab and interior holds up better.

Although, if you plan on throwing large heavy things in the bed all the time you would be better off with Frontier

Threw a ford 9 inch rear in the bed and it rolled around took out chunks of my bed!

Ouch, that's got to suck!

What about lifts? Does the tacoma have a 4" lift? Also how much are the lifts costing? A nice and I mean real nice lift for the frontier was $1600 for a 3", I'm looking for a 4" or so cause I know 5-6" you have to cut into the frame.

Whats the difference between the models? I tried to figure it out, was kind of confusing.

Funny, I had about 600 pounds of scrap alternaters in my truck yesterday from cleaning out my father in-laws shop and I didn't get even a scratch :) If you have a bed mat, which I highly recomend, I wouldn't worry about the bed. Without one it is fairly slick so stuff rolles around, with one they are nice.

As for the composite bed a lot of people are weary of it, personally I havn't found it any different from any other truck. I was throwing frozen logs a few months ago without any problems. I have carried everythign from an AVT to 2 fridges and part of a stove.

I considered the Frontier very closely, and this why I choose the tacoma over the Frontier:

-More ground clearence
-A better fitting interior that looks more updated in my opinion
-A better review from most major automotive press
-A longer box for the double cab, which I believe the Frontier now has from what I saw at the auto show.
-Toyota reliablity, although my last Nissan was fantastic as well (95 Pathfinder)
-More room in the cab
-More comftrable seats

A coworker has the new Frontier and I have the new DC Tacoma. His bed is one foot shorter than mine. His back seat/doors are not as big inside. He's a rather tall guy and big to boot and said he had trouble with the steering wheel on the Tacoma getting in and out. But he did like the Tacoma better overall but the getting in and out switched him over to the Frontier. Good luck on your choice, let us know what you end up with.:)

I think the fronty is a respectable second choice. It even has a better bed rail system. I've also heard that you get a lot more in the way of "accessories" at any given trim level, including the possibility of a sunroof.

But the reliability of the Tacoma, depreciation rate, and overall durability stand on their own very well. You do have to pay a bit more up front for the taco, but you will more than make it back in saved repairs, better resale, or both.

IMHO.

I have a 07' access cab 4x4 trd sport. I love it! I have been getting into some moderate wheeling since I have owned it and even stock it goes pretty much everywhere I have the balls to put it. Ordering my lift today, about 800 for the toytec 3" lift with OME shocks all the way around. From what I have read here though, you also need the total chaos upper control arms (about 600) to do it right and not have handling issues. I just had those delivered yesterday and am looking forward to hitting the harder trails in the next few weeks. There is TONS of info on lifts here on this forum so just search "lifts" or "Toytec" and you can get pretty much all the info you need on that subject.

Time to start searching!

There are hundreds of posts on this. Unlike Nissan's, there are numerous lifts available. I think there is only one company doing lifts for Nissan

Toyota.com, or again, search.

And sell that POS Nissan asap.

I wouldn't recommend going with a 4" lift, try researching bilstein 5100s they are a replacement strut for the front which is adjustable 0.85, 1.75, 2.50 you could realisticly acheive a 4 inch lift with that and some better rubbers and it will cost you $270ish for 4 bilsteins (rears aren't adjustable but can accomodate up to 2" of lift), if you do the install then $100 for an alignment, aal (add a leaf for the rear) say $200 if you want to get longer brake lines, carrier barring, axle shims, shock extender also you could install yourself. so all told $600 for a nice 2.5" lift then spend the remaining $1000 on some nice rubbers.

MODEL Difference,
TRD Off Road, electronic rear diff locker, progressive springs, bed mounted power outlet, chrome grill and rear bumper, 16" rims, trims levels are access cab or double cab short bed only

TRD sport, Limited slip rear diff, bed mounted power outlet, hood scoop, colour coded mirrors, grill, bumper, door handles, 17" rimes, all sizes above reg cab are available including dc long bed.

both are 4x4 or pre-runner (2x4) and have 2 speed transfer cases

any questions just ask

After my experience with Nissan with my 2007 SE-R, I would never buy, recommend, or even look at another Nissan product again. Ever.
Yeah! What he said;former Nissan 4x4 owner and after 2 trans. and motor rebuild you couldn't pay me to drive another one! Some 17 yr. olds problem now, poor kid. I love my 07' Prerunner,it smokes anything Nissan has on the road.

I have a double cab V6 6speed off road. Love it 100k no big issues Service and go. Check me on this but I'm not sure if you can get a rear locker on the frontier. my cousin had everything I did on his nissan but didn't have a rear locker oh and his was automatic. I personnaly like the full rear passenger roll down windows. on the frontier there is about a 3" section that doesn't roll down. The short bed is only for double cab manual trans. Pretty sure the auto you can get the long deck, right? or you can't get long bed double cab auto with off road package? Toyotas tend to have a higher resale value than most other trucks. matter of fact I think the Pre-runner is highest. anyway my two cents.
