The below is just conjecture...

I think they associate offroading needs and the need to have a shorter wheel base.

Where can a shortbox with limited slip go that a longbox with a locker can't go? A hell of a lot of places, imho.

The market for real offroading with longbeds probably isn't large enough to warrant its production.

Do you really need a locker?
Do you really need a longbed?

99.95% of tacoma buyers will (or should) answer no to one of these two questions

Well, I'm glad they feel like they should make those decisions for me.

Really, we're only talking about 12" difference in length here. If that is their logic, then they shouldn't offer the locker on anything but the RCSB.

My answer to the two question proposed by you would be:

Not as long as the LS diff in the Sport package works very well.

Yes, I need the long bed. I would be going from an 8' bed on my current truck to a 6' bed on the Tacoma.

Maybe 99.95% of Tacoma buyers would answer no to the locker question, but I doubt 99.95% would answer no to the longbed question. Me thinks that most people would rather have 6' of bed space rather than 5'.

I agree the Long Bed should be available on all models.

I went back and forth on what to order and it came down to the locker or the longbed.
I chose the long bed and had to sacrifice the off road functionality. You can go SR5 or Sport with the longbed, but no offline. the website you are using has that right.

a longbed is not good for offroading at all. that is why they don't have the offroad model with the longbed. it just makes sense.
I totally agree. I have the offroad and like the shortbed, it is very rare that I wish I had an extra foot. Keeping things dry and clean was more important to me, so my leer topper arrives in two weeks...

Plus I can always rent a trailer if I need to carry more. How often would you really need the extra foot.

yea, and if u want close to an extra foot, all u need is the bed extender.

if you are considering space in the bed, yes, a bed extender works great. i happen to need the extra foot for the added distance between my bedrack posts - everyday. the bed gets loaded up once and awhile, and, long stuff works better in a 6' bed. 6' beds are actually quite handy for some people. that's why they make 'em.

Maybe Toyota knows that their 8" locking rear differential (TRD Offroad package) is not really up to par and is more likely to fail on a long-bed than their 8.4" limited slip rear differential (TRD Sport Package).

The 8" locker was used in the previous generation Tacomas and there were more than just a "few" reported failures while using it. I couldn't believe when Toyota put the same 8" locker in the 05+ Tacomas.

Toyota banks on the fact that most people with the locker rarely use it, but for those that off-road a lot and use it there have been failures (both in the last generation and 05+ Taco's). The 8" locker has a reputation of not holding up well under heavy use, especially on trucks with larger tires. Go do a search on TTORA and you will see what I am talking about.

Most likely the extra weight and length of the truck/drivetrain in the longbed configuration is enough of a stessor on the rear differential that Toyota decided not to offer the the 8" locking rear differential with this configuration simply to avoid the failures that would happen. There is a reason why Toyota has never offered the locker (and always used the LSD) on TRD-Offroad Tundras........

I wish there was a shortbed option for the Access cab.

A long bed double cab, as previously stated, is much to large for any serious off road use. And also as previously stated, 99% of the people who buy the Off Road Package will never touch the locker.

In the 3 months I have had my truck, I have used my locker 5 or 6 times. I wouldn't have bought a PreRunner without it.
