Every 2GR-FE I've ever opened - and I have opened a few - has substantial oil sludge deposits in the intake ports. These are caused by an over-agressive PCV system. It appears that the fuel wash in the intake ports is not able to clear the sludge. The effect of the oil on combustion in the cylinders is probably very small or negligible. However the long-term accumulation of sludge in the intake undoubtedly - indubitably, if you prefer - impairs the volumetric efficiency. From some engines, I have pulled mothball sized clumps of sludge out of the ports. This affects the Toyota 3.5-liter V6 found in Camry, Rav4, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, Venza, and Lexus RX350.

I can agree that its necessary. After replacing my lower intake manifold with a modified one, I saw the gunk ( attached photos ) of how bad it was and set mine up as well. Surprised as how much oil it actually caught at my next oil change.

I have seen them just as bad as the one you showed, on unmodified stock engines. I don't know if environmental factors play a part in this, some people report clean intakes with no deposition at all.

The thing I found on my hemi ram when I had a catch can on it was that depending on what oil you were running varied the amount you collected in the catch can. I didn't run a wide variety of different oils but I collected the most with redline and the least with Amsoil, m1 was somewhere in between, never tried castrol.
