This question has plagued me for quite some time. Yes, I know what an AE86 is, but, why in the U.S. are the VIN #'s always AE88? I just assumed thatn if it were an AE86, that the VIN # would be such.

I have wondered the same thing about Toyota "model numbers". I thought that the AE92 was the two-door Corolla coupe, but my '90 DX sedan lists the model number on the driver's door sticker as AE92L. What gives? Is the AE92 a coupe and the AE92L a sedan? Anyone have a comprehensive and definitive list of these model numbers? Regards, Aaron

read the chassis code on the fire wall its stamped AE86.
ive owned a 86 sr5 with an AE86 vin, but both my 86 gts's have AE88 vin.
the reason its called a AE86 is the chassis code not vin# .

kinda a short break down of chasis codes

First Letter is the Engine block letter(s) ie A, E, S, ZZ, MZ, etc
the second letter is the car letter clasification ie E (corolla), P(starlet)
and the numbers i have heard a few theories but havent got anything solid
