I have a 2005 silver taco trd model. I just got a scooped hood installed. What do you think I should do with the bug/stone deflector, should I install it or not?

Does the dark colored bug/stone deflector take away from the :naughty::smokin: ness of the scooped look.

I say take off both the defector and the scoop. :saythat:

Just kidding, got a picture how this defector looks like?

It amazes me the love/hate for the scoop. I personally love it and think it adds a little something to an otherwise boring hood.

My mom has a 4Runner which is basically the same front end body style. It looks REALLY sharp with the scoop and deflector. It's silver as well to give you an idea.

LOL, now I get it ... I thought he was talking about a little piece of bug deflector mounted to the leading edge of the scoop. That would probably look extra fancy! Kinda like a scoop with sunglasses.

Same here. I put one on about 4 years ago and my hunting success rate went way up! It makes the 250 yard shot easy!

Back to the OP: there are several reports here about bug deflectors damaging the hood paint. So I would stay away from them, or at least do a lot of research to find one that does little or no damage.

It looks like you already have a clear deflector, why would you want to put a dark one on?

I would, and in fact am going to on mine, paint the inside the of the clear one so you end up with a color-matched deflector.

I am living proof that the bug shields do damage to your hood. I had the VS Bugflector II. Toyota makes the gap between the hood and the top of the grill so tight, that something needs to give. Unfortunately it will be the paint on the leading edge of you hood.

Maybe not now? But soon!:disappoin:disappoin

Every time you open and close your hood you risk chipping paint.

As for the hood scoop? I was at one point looking for one. But I seem to have grown accustomed to the clean lines without it.

A co-worker told me if I wanted to trade? He didn't care for his scoop hood, and I could have it.

But I decided not to. It's a personal preference thing.:thumbup:

It's your truck. make it how you want it!:clap::clap:

I know others besides you have said this. Personally, I have not seen it (yet), but would take a small bit of paint chipping over what these rocks would have done to my windshield. Two different instances, and both times the deflector sent the rock over the truck (at least, I can find no chips in the roof) and they were fairly sizeable as I could see them coming at me. That is not dirt, it is actual scuffs in the deflector.

That's cool! That'was why I had mine on.
But you are aware that the "laws of Physics" means that the small amount of "Up-draft" created by the deflector can never be enough to lift even a small rock over your roof. Unless it actually bounces of the deflector itself.

Even when I had the deflector on, rocks still hit my windshield.

In actuality the only part that the deflector protects is the front of the hood, which inevitably it will damage.

A lot of people told me that (PB) but I was the type "It won't happen to me" But it did!

Just keep an eye on it.

Good Luck!

I would absolutely agree with on rocks. Yes, those were perhaps lucky shots.

As far as bugs are concerned, I completely disagree that they do not help. The first summer I had my truck I took a trip across Kansas at night. This was prior to installing the deflector and the windshield was a disgusting mess at the end of the trip. Two weeks later, I made the same trip with the deflector on and I had very few bugs on the windshield in comparison.

Do they stop them all? No. Do they help? Yes, based on my experience.

And when talking about the "laws of Physics", would those be the ones that say a bumblebee can't fly? :)

The clear deflector on my scooped (wife calls it a snout) hood in the pic that I posted above came off of my non scooped hood after 2 years and 50,000 miles with NO damage at all to the hood or painted surfaces.
