Seems like Toyota may lose it's superiority on really small cars. The Mazda 2 looks to be a serious competitor to the Yaris, both in looks and function. Best part Mazda does not have those annoying center mounted guages and actually has a trip computer as optional equipment. It's even similiar on price. Oh well.

I like the Mazda2, although it could be a little more competitive. I'm glad they didn't go with the usual boring design but more so driving dynamics. yes I know its still an econo car but they injected their "fun" into it. Which is nice. of course the sacrifice of mpg but I'll take fun over that. Besides it gets decent mileage.

I do like the Yaris hatch, I like small European/Japanese hatches, so I'm bias there. But yeah the Yaris is dated but obviously with the next one 2012 model will or should up the ante. I hope they don't make the sedan as ugly (Ironic I'm saying that, I own an ECHO:facepalm: But let's just call it uniquely designed.)

But I'll take the Mazda2. I like small cars but I want some fun a.k.a MINI Cooper but with out the costs of a MINI. Probably wait till the next gen. This one is cool but we'll see.

Toyota lost its superiority when the Honda Fit came on the market. And it ain't just the Mazda2; the Ford Fiesta looks to crush everyone else in the market, and the Nissan Versa sells in droves (much of their sales is fleet).

I totally agree. I think the Fiesta is going to take the crown with the FIT. I'm glad there are more players in this segment, especially being for the U.S. And that they up the ante on these cars. Cause as we know in the U.S. in the past, cars like these are the really cheap, crappy, rather be dead than drive one of these cars kinda cars:lol::facepalm::rolleyes: If that makes sense. I'm glad they are kinda getting more quality and with more demand they will be sorta premium (for the segment) like Europe's small cars.

I like Mazda's plan with the 2, making it a driver's car despite how small and low powered it is. Right now all the players including the Fit have some serious flaws. The Yaris is aging, its definitely going to be left behind now that the 2 and the Fiesta are available. The only things the Yaris still has going for it is the still good fuel economy numbers and its still the best built of the subcompacts...not that the interior materials get better sadly.

I think the Mazda2 should do very well. It has a catchy name and seems to be a fun little car to drive, according to MotorWeek. The Aveo is going to be "on top of its game" or it is going to be left behind.

I feel these cars, along with the Fit, are nothing but rolling deathtraps. :thumbsdow
Even small cars today are much safer than some larger cars from several years ago. ;) I've been able to avoid an accident in my smaller cars that I couldn't have done in a larger car or truck. I had a friend die in an accident when his SUV rolled over. :headbang: Avoidance is my first step to any accident.

If you want to have a rolling death mobile, than get on a motorcycle. We call them donor cycles in the ER. That still doesn't stop people from riding them though.

I could care less if they all died, I hate the noise more than anything. Loud bikes: :cursin::brick::bash::deadhorse:fuckyou::spanking:
so just because you don't like motorcycles, every rider should die?

i hope you either reconsider that comment OR get to eat those words sometime very soon. :thumbsdow

keep in mind that the yaris is due soon for a new model. they're definitely aging, they've already received the mid-cycle refresh, and there's a whole new slew of sub-compacts for toyota to dissect.
Mopeds with doors. I'd rather walk. :thumbsdow
hahaha.

Nah, its not too late. They just need to redesign the Yaris and make it better than what the competition is offering.

According to the model cycle, the Yaris debuted in 2006 as an 2007 model. It's going to be five years real soon, so the cycle on this Yaris is soon to be up. So far, spy photos of any Yaris/Vitz test mules have yet to surface, but that doesn't mean that Toyota isn't working on it. Just wait for the car to come out. But everyone knows, the next Yaris has a lot more to shoot for.

Actually, you're off on the years. It debuted in late late 2005 as a 2006. There wasn't a gap in model years between the Echo and the Yaris. As for a replacement, isn't that new hybrid thingy they're bring next year essentially in the Yaris' class? The Auris I think it is.
