Thought I might as well post this. Its Quite Easy, but you should use caution while doing this because some parts are delicate. Before I start, note this: I am not responsible for any damages that may occur. I had no problems myself and it is quite easy, however, professional installation/removal is recommended if you feel it is needed.

Hope this Helps someone!

HOW TO REMOVE STOCK STEREO FROM GEN 4 TOYOTA CAMRY

Tools Needed
Slotted Screwdriver
Socket Wrench with 10mm and 12mm sockets (you may need an extender)

Steps

(Steps 1-3 are for Automatic Transmissions)
1. Turn off your car. Engage the E-Brake.
2. Overide the Shift Lock System by lifting this cap (use screwdriver) and pressing the button.
3. Shift Car into Low Gear "L".*
Image

4. Disconnect the Negative (Ground) Cable from the Battery Terminal with 12mm socket.*
5. Remove the Ash Tray (Next to the Cigarette Lighter)
5. Carefully Pry the Dash Trim Bezel off using the slotted screwdriver. Note the tabs and plugs in the back.
6. Unplug the 2 Cigarette Lighter Plugs and the Ashtray Bulb Plug.

7. Remove the 4 10mm Bolts at the corners of the stereo with the 10mm socket. You may need the extender to reach the bolts.

8. Carefully remove the stereo and unplug the 3 plugs in the back.

From here on, you can repair your stereo, install an aftermarket stereo, etc.
To put everything back, reverse the steps.

To install an aftermarket head unit, you will need to remove the mounting brackets off of the stock stereo. 4 bolts hold it down on each side.
Image

You may also need to purchase a wire harness and crimp caps to connect the head unit with your car.

This is my end result.

*Note that when you shift the car back into Parking Gear "P", the car will inch forward roughly 3 inches. This is normal.
*Note that when you reconnect the negative cable to the battery, your car alarm may go off. This is normal.

Another tip when installing the centre panel; that the bottom corner with the cigarette lighter does not click in as easy; however if you bend the plastic just slightly towards the ashtray; the whole panel will click in nicely. something i learnt when taking a peek behind my gen4 to make sure the antenna was still tightly in place.

hi, i'm installing a new stereo system for my friend's 1999 Camery XLE, but his harness does not look like the one on this write up...

here is the harness that is plugged into his stock head unit:
Image

he bought the harness for his car, which looks like this, but it clearly does not fit:
Image

we have finished the speaker installtion and all is left is the head unit, but i just can't seem to figure out why his camry has a different stock harness than all the others i see on the net... please point me in the right direction, so we can get it done... btw, we put in infinity components and they sound great, but it will sound better with the new head unit :]

thnx for reading,
roland

nice find! :)

I will be replacing stock stereo (broken CD), car has the AMP, so this information is a lifesaver

BTW, for me the Crutchfield website also suggest wrong harness (says it fits, even though I select JBL option which means there IS an AMP).

#16 ·
that's OK, I will contact them before purchase to make sure.

You wouldn't believe, but it said it doesn't fit at first when I selected my car, then when I clicked your link (same stuff) it said it fits LOL
EDIT: realized there are 2 similar harnesses for AMPs, one for 92-99, another for '00+, now seeing the full picture here :)

I have a hard time finding a stereo with all features I want LMAO (USB input for MP3 playing, HD tuner built-in, 6-channel for my AMP, RDS would be nice here, Euro tuning optional as I could sell it worldwide easier when I get bored with it LOL), none of those I like among JVC & Pioneer has te RDS :( what a shame ... such useful feature ... instead all of them come with some BS iPhone/iPod/iTunes/iShit stuff that I won't ever use

will get back to that tomorrow or on Monday maybe ...

BTW, Phil can you PM me your Crutchfields referral code? I may make use of it when ordering (my first purchase over there)

I put in your car info on their site and I got this adapter, definitely looks like the right one.

For anyone with the stock amplified system, you can bypass the stock amp and the one-plug harness. If you look inside to the right of the radio cavity, the typical 2-plug harness is in there wrapped up in foam and tape, and likely clipped to a metal frame. Once you remove the foam and tape, you can use the non-amplified 2-plug radio harness to adapt to the aftermarket radio and use its internal amp instead of the factory amp.

So, in my '99 XLE once I remove the factory radio (it WILL have an external amp as it does have door tweeters, right?) I will find that Toyota had left the 2 plug harness intact nearby and therefore those plugs are wired the same as if the car had a factory installation of a radio w/o the external amp? If so, that's so thoughtful of Toyota .

Stereo codes,anyone?

Hi!I am looking to put a new battery into my 2000 Camry LE 4 cylinder before Winter sets in.I also want to put the old but functional battery into a 2003 Tacoma that I need to sell.If I lose the Camry's stereo during the transplant can anybody tell me how to unlock the stereo without dealing with the dealer's service center? Is there a procedure with which I can retrieve the code before I do this deed?Thanks,Yrmac49

Radio #16814

Hi Mister_Perkins!Thanks for the information, but my 2000 Camry LE stereo is model #16814 so I doubt that this unlock code would work for me.Assuming that the procedure is the same, what code would I need for this model?Thank you or anybody that can help me with this.I don't want to risk losing the stereo until I have the proper procedure and code.I also need to do my timing belt soon. Thanks again!

it seems that the code *might* be the last 4 digits of the VIN, but other than that you might need to actually contact the dealer with car's VIN and unit's serial number to get the unlock code.

also try this old thread, maybe someone will help you over there too:

^^ My new HU
http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Car_Entertainment/2009_Car_Entertainment/KDC-MP342U

Just FYI, my factory harness in my 99 LE is the first type plug here
http://crutchfield.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7434 (Four and Six speaker BYPASS wiring)

So im assuming that even though I have tweeters, which inidcates I do have an AMP, this is the bypass wiring or my car just never got the amp....

My orig factory HU has 2 plug wiring that fits perfectly into back.....Its exactly what you see on the OG 87 & up scoche harness

So.....am I safe to assume I do NOT have a external amp?

Also, when i plugged the orig HU back in, im still NOT getting any sound out of rear speakers...Therefore, Im looking at possible culprit as either wiring or rear speakers (but I dont ever remember my factory system sounding like I didnt have Rear...

Any help greatly appreaciated!

I believe tweeters have nothing to do with the amp. they are simply wired in parallel with the front speakers, that's how they are connected on my car which came with an amp. I have used factory amp bypass plugs (Scosche from Best Buy) and all speakers are working with my new HU (JVC).
My car had the bigger plug at the back of factory HU (all wires in one plug), but down below it was connected with 2 smaller plugs (same ones as used by bypass adapter), so I used those instead when connecting new HU.

as far as I know, the first plug in picture you linked is for everything except for rear speakers and the second one (smaller) is just for rear speakers :)

so you connected only the first (bigger) plug from the Scoche bypass kit? it seems like you are missing one plug?

here's a pic of my dash stripped, the large connector hanging down is the one from the car's factory amp to stock HU, however down below you can see 2 adapter it goes through, they actually fit the amp bypass adapter and connect all speaker wires;

I used this amp bypass adapter:

here's my thread, maybe it will shed more light, note that in the beginning I used an amp integration adapter (metra), but was unhappy with sounds produced by my factory amp, so I bypassed it eventually and used the amp built into the new HU.

Wow....how did I miss that thread??!? I swear ive read everything on here like a bazillion times the last 2 weeks....

Anyways, that scoche connector is the universal harness adapter for toyotas....

This is the true amp bypass harness here (Metra TurboWires 70-8119 for Toyota Avalon/Camry/Land Cruiser Amp Bypass http://web2.cartoys.com/products/product.cfm/cartoys/AVALON_CAMRY_LANDCRUISER_AMP_BYPASS/attr/desc )

You just found the bypass wiring that all this JBL systems already have (which is why this bypass connector is probably no longer available) indicated in these 2 threads i believe

Anyways, thx alot dude!

No i connected BOTH plugs....The

The 'Scoche 87 & up' is the universal Toyota 2 plug connector....

The crutchfield link has this at the very top of the page before any info

AMPLIFIER INFORMATION
If the car has tweeters on the doors, it has an amplifier. The amp is behind the passenger's kickpanel. The factory wires come out of the amp and run back to the radio location. The wires plug into two connectors in the right side of the radio cavity.
Which has been making me second guess everything

Anyways thx....helped me confirm everything...Ive been chasing a ghost amp (thx crutchfield...shortly you will be receiving an update your info/you suck email from me....lol)

Ill update with my fix soon....

hey no problem, I've been through this already [:)]

anyways, something got messed up with that best buy link for scosche adapter. it's still available at other places if anybody needs it:
[ame]http://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-TA02B-Wiring-Harness-Toyota/dp/B00009UHKW[/ame]

also, this adapter is exactly same as Metra amp-bypass one (which is also universal for all toyota 87+), it's just cheaper.

Well I thought I'd post an answer to my question earlier in this thread and mention that my '99 Camry XLE w/ a factory amp definitely does not have the 2 wire connector that bypasses the factory amp harness that others have found lurking behind their dashes. It only has the single connector that hooked to the factory radio. I looked and looked for any kind of harness that looked like it would plug into the Toyota 2 wire harness adapter I bought, but nothing there is nothing there, :disappoin. So, I went to Best Buy and purchased the Toyota amplifier integration harness that connects the aftermarket headunit to my '99's factory amp through that single connector harness. It seems to be working fine so far and sounds better than the factory radio to boot.
