My 1998 Sienna AC will chirp like a nest of hatchlings when I turn it on. It gets louder and louder and then stops. Sometimes it makes no noise. Other times it is very low and just stops. Is it a belt, AC compressor or what? Thanks much! G-

Warm Up the vehicle, our 02 Sienna had that chrip for 5 minutes in below 0 Celcius. Also almost out of fuel, fuel lamp came on, filled it up and the chrip disappeared.
Use a piece of large diameter rubber hose as stethoscope and have someone start the car when you listen to compressor. See where the noise is coming from, the pulley/clutch/belt area or inside the compressor.
It’s possible the belt may be OK but something inside the compressor is causing the pulley to drag and the belt to slip and squeal.
