Just took delivery of our 2023 Highlander Hybrid LE, and we only received one keyfob, with the cut key insert for the second one when the fob comes in. Salesperson said there is a shortage of keyfobs, and they have been shipping the 23's now with only one; says they will send the second one later. He doesn't know whether Toyota will send it in the mail programmed, or if we'll have to go pick it up and get it programmed at the dealership. They don't know how long it will take.

I work at a car dealership in Canada. Here they second key fob is sort of like a recall. They will send it to the dealership and then you will have to book an appointment to get it programmed. I wouldn't expect it any time soon sadly.

Don't lose that key. :)

Hopefully your dealer would take pity on you can cut you a break on the cost of the replacement key- which can be very expensive. Smart Keys are not cheap to replace. I think that you can use the little metal tag that came with the first key to have the dealer make a replacement... but again, they aren't cheap. Keep that little metal tag in a safe spot. These days- they can probably program a new one using the VIN... but again... just don't lose your key.

On a recent trip to the dealer, I noticed a little white sticker on each car that was equipped with a Smart Key- indicating that it would only be delivered with one key... with the second key promised at a later date. The only vehicles that didn't have those stickers on the window were a few Corollas and Tacomas that didn't have the Smart Key system.

The metal tag is a code for cutting a new emergency key, the key that would get in the drivers door. A dealer should be able to make one from the VIN as well.

That won't start the car, though - you need a new fob for that. Programming a new fob requires access to the OBD port to program the computer to accept that fob.

I read on another thread (I believe Reddit - not sure) that dealers just received a notice that fobs will begin to be distributed in April. Of course, I have no idea if that's accurate. Just bought a 23 Highlander Hybrid Platinum yesterday and was very disappointed to learn about 1 key. Same article said all production from January will receive 2 keys so technically new owners in Feb/Mar will have 2 keys but we will still be waiting. Key is on a national backorder per the dealer meaning that none are available to purchase.

Good luck to someone who loses or breaks their 1 key. I literally think that car will be parked until April or later, which is nuts. So crazy that a car for this price comes with 1 key at the moment...

You can try to get your own, But you will have to pay out of pocket for it and to have a locksmith program it for you.
I got mine off eBay, I emailed them a photo of my key, and from that, they were able to send me a pre-cut key with fob. I then just needed to take it to my local locksmith where they programmed it for me. I think the key on eBay was $30 and the locksmith charged me $80, took maybe 10 minutes for them to do it. Got the key in the mail in about a week or 10 days I think it was. Got my key from this seller 1010 keys

Thank you! Unfortunately that seller doesn't have any Highlander fobs right now but that process is good to know. It's worth noting that some are selling keys up to 2022 but I have yet to find a 2023 key available via a 3rd party seller. I would be happy to pay out of pocket to get it done but I don't think it's an option right now unfortunately (at least not for 2023).

2023 Highlander Hybrid LE. Delivered in mid December. Only one key fob. This was on a rear drivers side window.

I saved this image so the dealer won't try and charge me later for programing the second key fob.

I bought my white 2023 Highlander Hybrid XLE AWD two days ago (found with great difficulty) and also received one smart key and two metal insert keys. When I asked when I would receive the second key, they replied that they had no idea and advised me to call Toyota directly. So I thought what would happen if China eventually attacked Taiwan and completely bombed the microchip factory?

In case it's helpful for anyone (and to be 100% clear, I am NOT AT ALL affiliated with this company - I am just posting this to be helpful because I just used them), I took delivery of a 23 Highlander Platinum Hybrid AWD last week with only 1 key like everyone else it seems. I checked with the dealer and there is a national backorder on keys so you can't order a 2nd one from the dealer even if you want to pay for one. So I just purchased a key from Car Keys Express and, while it isn't cheap, I now have a 2nd key until I get the other one from Toyota. I believe the key is $300+ if you want to meet one of their installers at a local dealer to have it done. But it was $500+ for me to have someone come to my house to install it. I live in Orange County, CA but I believe they are nationwide. This was the only company whose website I checked that I had keys for 23 model year specifically so they are hard to find, which is why I am posting this. I believe they just got their first shipment of 23 keys and their supply is limited...

In case it's helpful, I dealt with Derick when calling their phone number (call center) to buy the key and he was extremely helpful - 1-800-557-3977. If you live in Orange County, CA then you can contact Angel (the installer) directly at 714-719-8039 and apparently you can make an appt and then have him install it and then pay for it via his mobile truck (same company).

I can't vouch for this company in general, as I have only used them this one time, but I had a good experience with them. It took only 2 days between when I ordered the key and when it was done and it could have been done next day but I wasn't available. The key looks literally identical to our other key in that it says Toyota Highlander on the back but I am not sure whether it's OEM or not.

While I realize a lot of people probably don't want to pay for a key, this is probably one of the only options right now for those who do so I hope it helpful!

New owner just browsing the forums and saw this topic. I picked up a new 2023 Highlander on 27th Jan, with 2 key fobs!! That is NOT typical of my luck. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.....
Forget the gamble. Roll on a brand new Toyota filter for your next oil change. Better value, high chance of success. No funny business.

I work in the automotive industry at a tier one supplier. You can be sure whoever makes the fobs is filling assembly plant orders first, before what is now essentially 'service' parts orders (all the missing second fobs to already sold vehicles). It sucks, but I can understand why it's happening. Hope you get one soon.

I bought a 2023 Highlander Hybrid back in December, only one key fob. The dealer didn't tell me there was only one key fob until delivery. I have called Toyota "Brand Engagement Center" , to get more info on when we will get a second key fob. They want all sorts of info, your VIN number, mileage on the car, then just blow you off.

I wonder if these second key fobs are being delayed, as a way to keep new Toyotas from being re-sold with the high prices now for low mileage used cars ? Dealers can sell, new cars on the lot with a " market adjustment",, above MSRP, of $5000 or more. Most buyers don't even know, until they pick up their new car that it will only come with one key fob.
But it's harder to sell a used car with only one key fob.
That way the dealers can protect their new car sales, and markups, while previous owners have difficulty selling a used car with only one fob. So no competition with new car sales.
Any ideas?

Everything is a conspiraty theory until it's proven or unproven. Time will tell, but I believe the "model" that each car get two keys, two remotes, could be changed for life and the 2nd remote will just be another option until the purchasers revolt.

And that folks is how conspiracy theories get started. SMH

I just picked up my 2023 Highlander XSE AWD today and received 2 key fobs, so maybe there is hope on the way for those that only received one. Cheers!
