My 97 4Runner had an intermittent problem with the rear drivers side power window, which would stop working , then start working. It's now stuck in the down position and will not work at all. I tried using the master controls on the drivers door and the rear door controls to no avail. There is no motor sound. What can I check before removing the door panel to investigate? Any help is very much appreciated!!!!

it sounds like the switch may be dirty. unfortunaly it may be too new to open and clean. I believe both rear sitches are identical. try taking the rear pass switch and swaping it with the rear drivers switch. be carefull not to break the bezel on the switches. don't force. it shouldn't take much to pop it out. if you hear cracking STOP! pry a different spot. I believe the pry spot is in the front, but not sure. connectors should be identical. i think. see if that works for you.

The window regulator is probably done, i had a similar case on my accord and found out it was the regulator, didn't make any sound it just got stuck, so i figured it might be just a bad contact but i was wrong

Try Swapping the switches before you run out and buy a new regulator or motor. you can jump power to the window motor to see if it works. ( make sure you know what you are doing ) But the fact that it's stuck in the down position sounds like the "up" side of the switch finnaly got dirty enough to stop making contact. Never buy parts before you know they're bad. You can get the info off the net if you look hard enough. Mitchell or Alldata will sell you the info to almost anything you'll need to repair your car. You will need a basic understanding of electricity and mechanics to use the info. It can be very helpful though. usually costs about 10 bucks.

Thanks everyone who responded!! I've since fixed the problem. I opened up the wiring harness in the hindge of the door and found a severed wire on the "up" circuit. i found it by wiggling the wires and holding down the switch in the up position. Thanks for the suggestions!!
