2016 RAV4 backup camera sway lines

I recently started leasing a brand new 2016 RAV4 XLE as of January 15th 2016. For about a month, my backup camera had the standard two blue lines with a red line indicating where my number was. In February however, I noticed that out of no where my car had started using yellow sway lines that moved with the steering wheel to show where the car would go when backing up. As of about a week ago now in March, I am back to the regular blue lines with no sway/movement lines when backing up. I visited the dealership today and was told that they have no idea how I could've gotten the yellow sway lines on the backup camera because they're not even offered for the RAV4. Anyone have any idea on what happened?

Well, I just bought a 2016 RAV4 XLE a couple of days ago and it may depend on what options you have, but on my particular XLE, I actually have three different options for the "Back Camera Guide Line Settings." So try this:

With the vehicle running, press the Apps button, then tap on Setup > Vehicle (you may need to tap the arrow to move to the next screen) > Back Camera Guide Line Setting. There you'll see three options. You can tap on one and then, with your foot on the brake (of course!), shift into Reverse to see what it looks like, then back into Park, select the next option, Reverse, Park, etc., and select the one you want.

I don't know how this setting would change randomly, but if that's what you're saying yours is doing, that might signify other issues that need to be addressed. And, of course, if the dealership doesn't even know about these settings, that's another issue altogether!!! :surprise:

Hope that helps!

C ya!

Thank you for your response Ron. I did try to change the settings to see if I had accidentally done so in the past, however none of the options got me back to the yellow predicting lines when backing up and moving the wheel. I guess my real question is if this option even exists in the first place on the 2016 RAV4 xle model, or if it was just a glitch?

Don't know what to tell you.... I have just about every option on mine, a 2016 XLE, lane departure, parking assist, adaptive cruise, push button start and a whole host of other options -- it's called the "Convenience Package" on the sticker. When I do as indicated before, the top option is the one I think you're talking about with the lines moving with the steering wheel; the second (middle) option shows two lines with an X in the middle; and the third option just shows a single line stretching from side to side behind the vehicle. So if your '16 XLE also has that Convenience Package, it should work the same way. If not, then I would say something is wrong somewhere!

All 2016 reverse cameras have the predictive lines. I recently bought at 2016 RAV4 and the yellow dynamice guidelines that move as you turn the steering wheel wasn't showing, just the static lines (though in the test drive vehicle it was demo'ed to me).

I figured out how to get the lines to re-activate. It's because the steering angle was either not calibrated at the factory (and the dealer subsequently didn't do it during pre-sale checks) or you disconnected the battery and it lost the settings. Here is the procedure to set the calibration so the yellow guidelines that move as you turn the steering wheel will show.

Step 1: Enter the diagnostic menu for the display system. You do this by turning on the vehicle (but do not start the engine) So either turn the key to the first notch or just press the Power On button and not stepping on the brake (if you have push button start). Hold the "Audio" button on your the main console, then turn the light on/off 3 times. You should hear a distinctive beep, that means you've activated diagnostic mode, let go of the audio button. And the menu should appear.

Step 2: After you've entered the menu, you can then see the settings on the screen. "Camera Setting" will be grayed out. You should now proceed to start the engine (and it should no longer be grayed out)

Step 3: Select "Steering Angle Setting"

There will be two buttons on the screen "Steering Center Memorize" and "Max Steering Angle Memorize"

Step 4: Make sure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position, and press "Steering Center Memorize"

Step 5: Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and press "Max Steering Angle Memorize"

Step 6: Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and press "Max Steering Angle Memorize"

The system should then "Beep" and return you to the previous menu

Turn off the vehicle and the next time you start it, it should no longer be in diagnostic mode.

Make sure to select the first option in the Vehicle: "Back Camera Guide Line Settting" in the "Vehicle Settings" portion of the standard menus

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I had the same issue where the guide lines were not displaying.

I was able to get into the diagnostic screen while the engine is started, so that simplifies Step 2.
Also, the Steering Angle Setting button appears gray and nothing happens when you press it initially. You have to press and hold it and then it will go to the next screen to continue with steps 4-6.

Overall very helpful post.

This worked on my 2018 Rav4 XLE with entune audio (no internal nav). I think you have to hit next once before you get to the center and max angle buttons. Also found a screen that calibrates all the lines. Think i held down the camera button that was grayed out instead of the steering button above.

What Lights?

Hello, is this the same procedure to follow for a 2016 Rav4 LE? my backup camera only shows the blue lines. I tried following the steps indicated to access the diagnostic mode but I'm a little confused. Perhaps I was doing it wrong and didn't understand the step where it says " Turn on the lights 3 times. What lights are you referring to? and my car doesn't have push start so do I press the brake or no brake, Sorry for all the questions, i would just really like to get the sway lines to work in my Rav. Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone.
So, I took the wife's Rav4 for a drive after replacing the battery. I noticed when I reversed the vehicle to park, the reverse guidance lines didn't show. I mentioned it to her and she said she noticed it as well. I found this post and followed all the steps posted here and still no luck.
It's not because the battery was removed this happened. I read somewhere this could be the cause. In this case not at all.
I also didn't see the setting that states "backup camera guide lines setting". Maybe this differs from build years who knows.
This is what I see when I put the vehicle in reverse.

I will edit this post as I have found the solution. It was very simple with a few clicks.

How did you fix this?

Sorry for the late reply. I took some pictures and completely forgot to post them.
I'll look for them when I have some free time.
IIRC, when you put the vehicle in reverse, you have to then click on the icon that shows the vehicle. It should only have to ninety degree lines showing at the front. It's a little hard to explain, but I will post a picture once I free up some time.
Thanks.

Is there a way to change those calibration settings while having a different head unit?

On my Toyota RAV4 2016 (Elegance trim level, European model) I swapped the original HU with a Dasaita PX6 so that I can have Android apps, navigation and so on. After taking the car to service they reset something though they do not admit it :D and now the guide lines are still visible, but they just show max left or max right, there is no longer fine adjustment depending on the steering wheel. If I enable the Dasaita guide lines I can still see fine adjustment, but the original ones were better, plus the screen becomes a mess with the two graphics overlapping.

Is there another option for me to change the calibration, an OBD2 app maybe?

Go the same problem with the battery charge level went too low due to pandemic, ie., parked the car too long. I followed the instructions posted on this post and decided to to try out the solution of "... Start the car, put in reverse, steer all the way to the left, then all the way to right..." and voila, immediately I saw the yellow sway lines reappear!!! Done. I didn't have to go into the setting menu. Thanks for all the help!!!

Is your car manual or automatic? Was the engine on when you did the left-right thing?

I tried this with mine (manual diesel, late 2015 rav4.4 facelift model) and the lines do not appear (I only see the fixed grid, not the swaying ones). Being manual, I can only do this with the engine on (to have power steering) and the clutch fully pressed (not to drive back while the rear gear is engaged), so I do not know if this could affect the "restoring manouver".
