My speedometer exist wrong reading speed, the reading speed is less than GPS‧ When engine warm up,the tachometer show only about 500rpm but I feeling the engine running still very smoothing at idle‧ The odometer still work well so I think the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) is fine‧ There are some electric fails on PCB board of speedometer and tachometer‧ I decide to repair the incorrect meters‧ It is very simple to fix the problem. Just to replace some electrolytic capacitors, note that the polarity of capacitor. you need

1. for speedometer,100uF/25V、22uF/25V、6.8uF/25V,see below from left to right

2. for tachometer,two 10uF/25V

3. Note that you don't need to remove the needles of speedometer and tachometer;if you remove the needles, when you re-install it back. You must turn ignition switch at "ACC ON"(not "start"). And then carefully put the needles align with the zero mark position. This calibration must be done correctly.

Excellent info there Michael! I took the liberty of having your post broken out into its own thread so I could add it to the DIY sticky, and if people have any questions it will be cleaner, not being in the "What did you do to your Camry today" thread. Hope you don't mind.

This problem has cropped up a number of times. I didn't know there were electrolytic capacitors in there. They are notorious for drifting and failing with age. I just recently repaired a Samsung LCD TV that was power cycling itself due to bad caps on the power supply PCB. $3.00 worth of caps to fix a $600 TV.

The third , I think its the 2.2 mfd capacitor- I could NOT see its polarity as installed on the circuit board. Did a bunch of looking as to the various marking conventions for capacitor polarity, etc.... BTW mine is not working at all, before the fix, nor after replacing the three caps..... Wondering if the diode he mentions at around 10 minutes is bad , and thus the speedo is a DOA..... Nice DIYwriteup, well done....

A diode would be easy to check. Should be very high or nearly infinite resistance in one direction. Nearly zero in the other. Touch the ohmmeter probes in both orientations to check it both ways.
