'06 Scion tC In-Car Timing chain replacement

Just bought it, 140k, 2AZ-FE. Getting a clacking noise in the vicinity below the exhaust camshaft sprocket, per my stethoscope. Clacking disappears if engine is accelerating under load or decelerating. Engine runs fine, no CELs. Checked the valve clearances, replaced the chain tensioner and VVT actuator, no change, can't see visible signs of chain problems. Ran it without the serpentine belt, noise still there. Filtered the engine oil and the cut-open contents of the oil filter and found about a teaspoon of aluminum flakes. Toy dealer will give me a (expensive) second opinion this week, but it looks like I'm going to DIY replace chain, slippers, sprockets. Only other thing I can think of is a bent exhaust valve or broken valve spring on No. 1 cylinder. Not a lot of room between engine and frame for this job. has anyone done it? Any clever tips? I would think that if you had a bent valve or broken spring, you'd have an issue that would cause a rough running engine or a CEL. Check the history of the VIN and see if anything was done in regards to burning oil. Maybe you've got a burnt out Cam journal from a lack of oil pressure at some point?

wow brilliant suggestion makes perfect sense, Mr. Fate. Appreciate your input. Dang had the camshafts out when I replaced actuator, but wasn't smart enough to think of it. I'll probably have them out again after I hear from Toyota and will measure, and Toy will provide me the history. This is the fourth 2AZ-FE I've owned and never had to go so deep. I'm also wondering about broken piston skirts, broken rings and connecting rod / bearing wear, but also don't have those diagnostic skills, hence the toyota dealer appointment. I've learned 3 lessons from this car: a) don't buy cars that have normal size engines shoehorned into narrow engine compartments; b)don't buy high mileage cars that are wildly popular among twenty-somethings; and c) pardon the chauvinism but don't buy cars with 140,000 female miles on them unless you know her. I'm 62 and an engine swap is on my bucket list, and I'm thinking I must be more careful about what I wish for, cuz I smell one coming.

Wise advice. My neighbor is a 30 year dealer mechanic and said that first thing, in the dark, without a stethoscope; either a bent valve, failing clip or slid seal. It would be my first head removal in 40 years. I'll probably be back here in two weeks looking for more advie. Thanks for the reply.
