Just bought it, 140k, 2AZ-FE. Getting a clacking noise in the vicinity below the exhaust camshaft sprocket, per my stethoscope. Clacking disappears if engine is accelerating under load or decelerating. Engine runs fine, no CELs. Checked the valve clearances, replaced the chain tensioner and VVT actuator, no change, can't see visible signs of chain problems. Ran it without the serpentine belt, noise still there. Filtered the engine oil and the cut-open contents of the oil filter and found about a teaspoon of aluminum flakes. Toy dealer will give me a (expensive) second opinion this week, but it looks like I'm going to DIY replace chain, slippers, sprockets. Only other thing I can think of is a bent exhaust valve or broken valve spring on No. 1 cylinder. Not a lot of room between engine and frame for this job. has anyone done it? Any clever tips?
