10 Month Ownership Impression: Avoid Camry At All Costs

I don't know about anyone else’s experience so far but I've had my Camry for just 10 months now and my conclusion is that it's an absolute toilet. I am so disappointed after trading in my Corolla XRS for this Camry SE V6 that my head nearly explodes when I think of the mistake I made. The transmission flared, the transmission had to be "flashed", then the transmission developed a 1st second gear chatter (basically the clutch pack failed) and the tranny had to be replaced, the steering shaft had to be replaced, then the car needed an alignment, then front subframe bolts had to be tightened because the body was creaking oddly in turns, the dashboard had to be fixed because of a non-stop rattle but the thing still rattles when cold or on any moderately bumpy road.

Now there is this weird curtain airbag rattle that no amount of pushing and prodding or punching (yes I'm frustrated with this car) will cure. The dealer can't seem to get a good high speed balance on the tires (or worse there is some kind of new vibration).

The best part is the brakes are now warped, which I'm just POSITIVE the dealer will tell me is my fault even though the car has 20k on it and I have never, ever in the history of EVER owning a vehicle even replaced the brakes on a vehicle I've owned never mind having them warp.

If you are in the market for a new car, avoid a Camry at all costs. Compared to say my wifes RDX (which was only a few thousand more I might add) my ownership experience has been that the Camry is a miserable miserable vehicle to own and I sorely regret my purchase.

You are out of mind. You got a Camry that has lots of problems. You condemned the Camry because of the problems. But do you notice that majority of Camry owners don't have the problems you experienced. So how can you apply your expirences on others?

Sorry to hear that, every companies has it's bad eggs...

So far my i4 is doing good 5000 mi, no problem "knock on woods" :D

Get rid of the damn thing before you blow your head off.

How do you know if the brakes are warped?

I've heard of rotors warping out, but not brakes .

For the OP thread poster --> Oh well. I have an 03 camry, and I'm more than happy with my camry. maybe you just got a bad one out of the bunch. =/

Just turned 15,000 miles on my 2007 V6 Camry replacement, Acura TL...

A little over 15 months of ownership:

1. Haven't been to the dealer since I bought it

2. Hasn't once given me a single reason to pause and wonder: "What was that?"

I feel sorry for all you folks having trouble with your Gen 6s, I feel even worse for the shills that still try and cover Toyota's azz on these issues... I haven't been here in a few months, but looks as if the same ol', same ol' is still happening.

Pity!

If there is any consolation, I feel your pain. Our camry has 33k and after about 3 sets of tires, we minimized the vibration problem. I had to end up with a brand name tire for about 7 bens. This after 3 days at the dealer arguing about the vibration. Finally the service manager told me that it is a known issue with some 6th gen camrys and vibration in the 60-80 range. I know people here will say "but toyota has no tsb", "I dont have the problem". All I have to say is good for you and I hope you never do. I had the tranny tsb done, the brake tsb, I finally found out that the "crack" I hear every morning when driving away is the ABS. That's great technological advancement when the ABS makes your car sound like a rust bolt. Not to mention my A/C issue which I gave up on explaining on this site. But to me quality has gone down. My dad's camry is a 97, solid car. Almost 200k miles, just recently decide to do the timing. I dont think he ever changed the spark plugs and I changed one of his mounts last year. That's it.
I cant say all camrys are bad, they all have their flaws. I just got a bad one I guess just like you. If you cant live with it, trade it in. I'm keeping mine until I can trade it in. Good luck.

Thanks, it's nice to know at least some people understand that I'm trying to sway the masses, I'm just venting because it's so extremely frustrating to spend this much on a car and have it at the shop every week. It's even more frustrating when it gets out of the shop only to have the next thing break as soon as it's out. And the killer is that the last toyota I owned (which was $200/mo less) never had a single issue.

Someday I will likely trade the car as suggested but like most people I'll be upside-down for another year or so - until then I'll continue to deal with the onslaught of service visits.

As for Toyota Customer Service, I tried them when Acton Toyota refused to shut off my seat belt warning "due to liability". All I requested of them for was for the name of a dealer that would perform the task. The only help they provided was they said they'd "make a note of it" but told me to "call around" so my expectations of Toyota Customer Service being able to assist in a more major issue like this are not exactly high.

16 months of ownership, 29,000kms on the odo, not a single problem :D
like others have said, you probably got a bad one. every single manufacturer has their own problems...acura has the tl's problems, audi and VW for their tranny, bmw and benz for their electricals and whatnot.

just trade it in for another car. :)

If you're really that unhappy, contact the Toyota Corporate Offices and tell them all your issues. I've had my 07 XLE V6 for 19 months and have not had a single issue to speak of, here's some cheese for your whine.

I love my 08 SE V6. I clean it every week to make it look good.

It is so unfortunate that someone pickup a defective one. It could happen to any brand name, even for those luxery cars. But overall, I think Toyota is still good, better than Honda.

You didnt say the year of your camry but it seems the 2007's and newer have too many problems...too bad you didnt come to this forum BEFORe you bought the camry! Get rid of it now if you can. I think i'd take the money hit because this car is bad and you will never be happy with it, even if all the issues were fixed tomorow.

Unfortunatly you did get a lemon, the ones made before 2007 were fairly bulletproof and now they aren't. I have read post after post on the problems from cars of this "gen": problems with drive by wire, problems with ABS clunk, problems problems and more problems...i guess toyota jumped the shark after they beat Ford in sales and started designing in defects just like they do too.
I love my 2002 V6 but my next car will be a Honda or Nissan (of which i've owned 4 in the past and 3 were great cars).

That is a very frustrating situation. I am sure that folks that are in the market for a new car appreciate seeing both sides of the story, good and bad.

I'm sorry to hear about your luck, I hope everything works out for you.

sounds like most of the problems are with the V6s. ive heard WAY more problems with the V6s than the I4s. and the I4 problems ive heard seem to all be with the auto tranny. the I4 with a manual tranny has no problems that ive heard about and mine hasnt had any trouble at all so far. sorry to hear about all of those problems though, its very...unToyota

#33 ·
Wrong. Some manual I4's also had a hestitation symptom.

Just like said before, each company has its lemon cars and some typical issues. I am sorry for any guy, any brand who got a lemon handed -it's nerve reckoning. But I can honestly say that all brands have something to complain about. I had many brands from american/german lux to most Japanese, and I even experienced Chech built Skoda's and China built Buick's and Audi's - none was perfect. My latest experience, a brand new Charger with slipping tranny/clutch, which made it painful just to have a smooth getaway from a traffic light, embarrassingly squeaky breaks, and rattle.

My XLE V6 - US built - goes strong and nothing seriously to complain about. If I run over a bump and the car makes a squeak - I don't panic. But no tranny flare or constant bad rattle, clunking turning noise, ABS noise and who knows what et all.

sorry for your issues....ive seen plenty of issues on gen 6's at the toyota dealer im a tech at, but none as drastic as yours
ive dealt with rattles and squeaks, the brakes issues (those brakes do wear out very quickly) and the ECM recalibrations for the hesitation on the I4 5 speed tranny...
ive never seen the flare issue or any tranny replacements on camrys in my 9 months as a tech for the same dealership
we have plenty of satisfied gen 6 owners here who love their camrys, and as im sorry for your issues, i dont think youre swaying the opinions of the masses here.
im a happy gen 5 owner myself, and ive only had to replace maintenence items on my car, which has done 57,400 miles to date. all camrys arent as bad as yours

I have an 07 LE that was built in 9/06 and picked up in 10/06. Only 13k miles so far. The tranny flared and I had to video it to convince the guys to fix it. The first trip resulted in them not finding the flare. And the dash rattled when it was cold. A 6 inch piece of gray packing foam rubber neatly stuffed down at the base of the windshield cured the problem. Didn't need to disassemble the interior to quiet a squeaky rub. That's been it except for the rats trying to make the engine their new home last fall. Poison bait took care of that in short order. My only complaint now is that it runs so smoothly and is so quiet that I am continuously fearful of being nailed by one of the guys in sun glasses.
