Engine turns over just fine, but it won't start. Has happened 2 or three times before. Tried wiggling battery cables under the hood. After a while, started and ran OK for several weeks. Then it happened again. Same solution. Ran several weeks again. This time can't get it to start after wiggling cables. Has about 145,000 miles on it.

With a 34-year old vehicle, could be a host of things.

But always start troubleshooting with the basics...fuel, air, spark. Have you sprayed some Starting Fluid into the intake manifold and seeing if she will start? Is the starter making any strange sounds with turning? (The gears can get worn down over a long time.)

Sounds like you have a connection issue, worn or corrosion.
Check the chassis to engine ground (s). If that's not good the ECM won't allow a start.
Those grounds are not off the battery. Traditionally Toyota will run a ground wire from a fender-well or the firewall to the engine intake, also not uncommon for the transmission to have a ground of it's own too.
