1994 v6 auto, hesitation problems...

as some of you might know, i recently got this 1994 v6 xle automatic with 117k miles and it appears it was taken good care of but it has a hesitation problem when i floor the pedal. it thinks about downshifting for a second or two and then most of the time, goes ahead and does it, but under hard acceleration, there's somewhat of a float, not a steady hard pull like my 93 v6 camry used to have. and this one supposedly has a better motor (1mzfe) and more horsepower. what stuff should i check first and then second and so on, since the maintenance schedule is unknown on this car. The CEL is not on btw, but i don't have an obdii tester yet to see if there are codes that don't trip the light. also, the o/d light isn't on or flashing.
it starts easily, idles great and there's no detectable miss in the engine by the way. just the annoying hesitation and floating.
thanks much

well, ok. hadn't heard that one. i ohmed them out and they hit right on 20k ohms and are whitish and also gapped at .043, so i assumed that meant they would be okay. if it were a 4 banger, i'd replace them - no hesitation (pardon the pun) - but you know how bad that bank 1 is...i guess i'll bit the bullet and do them though, on the off chance they could be causing the highspeed float/hesitation problems.

well, i was thinking the same thing. the fronts are denso, but i haven't checked the back ones. going by the other things i'm finding, it won't surprise me if they were never changed. thanks for the info. i'll put that on my short list, along with checking/changing the fuel filter. all odbii diags show ok, so i'm not going to worry about o2 sensors or maf or tps at this time.

well, i got a bluetooth odbii reader today and not sure what all the numbers mean.
the o2 sensor voltages seems to go between .1 to .8 but the fuel trim numbers for bank 1, sensor 2 (downstream sensor of the cat i believe) stay at 99.2% and don't change like the other 2 sensors do. they float around 0 with plus or minus readings. do these readings mean something to anyone out there?
tks

"...take it into a shop and have them tell you "exactly" what it is."
mate, I wish there was a shop like that around here that would diagnose it right, fix it right the first time and not use any more parts than necessary to do the job. unfortunately, the shops usually do what i do - throw parts at it till its fixed - except they charge me labor on top of the waiting time, haha.

thanks for all the help though gentlemen. i'll report back if i can figure it out.

i pulled the easy plugs last night and they are all whitish. i believe that confirms my lean condition or floating at high speeds or under load. i'm going to check the fuel filter. i read somewhere a way to check the flow rate at the rail, which would prove if everything up to that point is good. will have to find that article again. also, going to look at the o2 sensors and see where that goes. thanks guys for any and all help on this.

nope, i haven't done much of anything to it. i just got it and the PO died so i bought it from his son, who didn't know anything about the maintenance history. i hate to start replacing parts but i guess a fuel filter and plugs couldn't hurt to start with. hopefully i'll get some more helpful ideas on this frustrating problem. i did spray seafoam into the intake as per their instructions though and i've added techron to the tank but that didn't seem to help much if any. also, i've replaced the air filter and trans filter and fluid. it was pretty dirty. might need to do that again but not sure if there's much value to doing that again since it smells ok and looks pretty red now.
