1998 Avalon AC Problem

New here but I did search on AC problems and still would like to ask a couple of questions. Out of the blue the whole AC (auto) system/blower/etc. is dead. no lights for AC button, fresh-recirc button, or Auto. The location selector buttons will light as do the fan speed buttons but no air blows with button on. I have the factory shop manual for the car but it isn't very good. No wiring schematics, it mentions an AC fuse but none of the fuses I can find are labeled as such. I think I read on some V6 Camrys it's hidden behind a kick panel. Is it true that 'heater' fuse is for AC? Are there any other items on same circuit as AC that would help give some clues?

You should check the Blower Motor Linear Controller as this component is not known to a lot of Avalon owners and is the circuit board that controls the blower motor and A/C.

The Blower Motor Linear Controller is located near the Gas Pedal on the Driver's Side (Left) of the car.
The Resister is also located nearby.

The details are in this posting:

Our 1998 Avalon XLS is the same as the Lexus ES and Camry.

So the part is interchangeable and the new Parts Number is: 87165-32010

It is not necessary to buy the old part: DENSO 499300-2021

The new part looks different but works the same: DENSO 499300-2090, or Toyota Part #87165-32010

I bought my replacement part from this website in the United Arab Emirates in Dec 2013 when I had the problem;
https://partsouq.com/en/search/search?q=87165-32010

Item(s) Subtotal: 87.81$
Shipping & Handling: 18.73$
Total for This Shipment: 106.54$ (in USD)

Canadian Customs charged me approx. Cdn $25

There is not a lot of room to work near the Gas Pedal, and so I unscrewed/disconnected the Gas Pedal to get more room.

You also have to peel back the carpeting.

Good Luck!

If the system had no refrigerant, you should still get fan and all the air selections working. Sounds like a relay or fuse since everything with the HAVC is out

I'm pretty sure it's an electrical problem since it is now doing this intermittently. Sometimes it works normally and then next time starting the car it's back to nothing. I wanted to take a look at Htr/ac relay (behind right kick panel) but there's a bracket in the way making it difficult to remove.....
