2002 Toyota Camry Speaker Upgrade

I've searched and searched, but I couldn't find any info on a 2002 Camry's speaker configuration. I know there are 2 6x9 speakers in the rear, but what about the 2 in front (6x9 or 6.5?) or the tweeters? Any help would be appreciated. I am just about to rip my hair out trying to figure out what size they are! :)

What would you guys suggest for speaker upgrades (just the 4 large speakers, no tweeters)? I'm currently looking at the Infinity Reference (6953) or Alpine SPS6939. I'm not planning to get an amp or change the HU.

Can I use the new speakers along with the existing tweeters? Or will that screw up the frequency handling? I am going to replace them with 2-way speakers at the least and 3-way at the most.

It's come to my attention (from Crutchfield) that the Camry's front doors may be too shallow for 6x9's, forcing me to use 6.5" speakers.

Any input on this? I'd much rather have all 6x9's :(

So a baffle is basically like a washer for nuts/bolts -- it just increases the max top mounting depth? But what about clearance between the speaker and the plastic part that covers the speaker from the outside?

Open up your door and take out the stock speaker. That will give you an idea for how much clearance there is available. The plastic protective part you are referring to is an extension of the plastic baffle built into the stock speaker. Since you'll be putting in your own speakers, you'll have to make your own baffles. If you feel it necessary to add a plastic piece for protection, by all means do so.

Ok, thanks for the tips.

Now, I was looking at the Infinity References, but Circuit City was not so anxious to help me out, so I said, screw them. A local place has MB Quartz speakers for $200 a pair (6x9) and $160 for 6.5". Are MB Quartz any good? They say they're better than References... I hope the extra $50 is worth it :)

I did listen to them; I just wanted to know if they have a track record for failures or quality :) They sound a little better than the Infinity References: a bit better highs ;)

From my experience with my old '97 Camry, there is quite a bit of room behind the speakers in the door. I had a set of Alpine 177a components, and there was enough room to get the crossovers into the door behind the speakers. The components were 6 3/4", and were fairly deep themselves.

Generally speaking, I think you'd probably be happier if you did get a HU and amp for the speakers, and spend less on the speakers themselves. That's just my .02 and I don't know what kind of budget you're working with, but the most important part of the system is the source and power... most speakers will sound decent.

If you are really against getting the HU/amp setup also, then I'd recommend against the MB Quart speakers, and go with Alpine. MB Quart is better both in sound quality and reliability, but you really would not have the kind of amplification from your stock system that would make the MB Quarts significantly better sounding (you might actually hurt them). I'd also consider looking online for cheaper rates than $120 (Circuit City). I know they have them at the following site for $80.

Finally, you'll definately want to take your stock crossovers and tweeters out. The stock 6x9s probably were two way at most, and the Alpines and Infinitys are both 3-way, so they'll have their own tweeter.

Let us know what you decide.

Well, the shop that I went to had the MB Quartz being powered by an unamplified HU around 40W or so. I don't see how not amplifying the signal can hurt the speakers... I would get a new HU, but the double din ones are ugly and I don't want a big void (or pocket) if I use a single one. An amplifier is too expensive for my budget right now ($300 for the cheapest I hear). I'd also have to go all-out and get caps/cables/etc... :( I just want some better treble and room for upgrades if I want to in the future. I listened to some Alpines at CC, but I didn't pay as much attention to them as the Infinity or Pioneers.

marukoo: I forgot to get the specs and #'s for the MB Quartz. I just know that they were very comparable to the Infinity References but with better treble.

IMO, the MBQ's sounded great at the shop with just their plain HU. I bet they will sound better in my car since it's not an open area like their shop. The only thing now that worries me is that the front door speakers may be 6.5, not 6x9 (ever computer system a retailer has checked shows the 2002 camry to have 6.5" in the front...). Mach_y says they are 6x9, but man oh man am I confused.

Well, it took a lot of work on the part of the installer to get the 6x9 MB Quart's into the front doors, but it worked out nicely :) Had a little issue with the speaker hitting the window when it was put down.

I decided to leave the stock tweeters as is, because it was not a real crossover, but just a cap on the tweeter. I get a couple bits of crackling at high volumes, but that was just while testing in out-of-norm volumes :p In the future I will definitely look into replacing the HU and adding an amp... one piece at a time :D

Thanks for all the help so far! Could not have done this without your help; especially mach_y ;)

edit: I'll post the model # of the speakers in a bit.

ah, the speakers I got were the MB Quart DKC-169. When I was at the shop, I saw a big-ass Dodge truck being outfitted with DVD and a brand new RSX with speakers that cost $650 a pair! (Focal separate woofer/tweeter). Had a big, long amp in the trunk too. It's a little belittling to see all this compared to my $500 spent at the shop today :( But I'm happy with my purchase.

speakers

you can get speakers at a REALLY good price off of www.etronics.com

I bought 4 inch infinity kappas to go in my truck, and they were still about 50 bucks less than what infinity wanted for them.

2nd gen cam speakers

Anyone got recommendations as far as the speakers in the dash of my 87 camry are concerned? they're what, 3.5" or something like that, right? tiny... I have a nice Sony with Xplods in the back but the stock speakers are still in up front... I'd like to get Xplods up front too if any of then would fit.

you can do anything more, unless you go the route of amp and woofers.

Yup, I know. but I was asking for other recommend setup.. Like different brand of the speakers for front and rear. Or same brand with different model.... Thanks!

I have the DKC-169's and I love them. I have two in the rear and two in the front, along with the stock tweeters in the dash. No new HU yet, but it still sounds great.

Other than MB Quart, Pioneer and Infiniti References/Kappas are pretty good too.
