2004 Corolla - Can I use a Group 26R battery or Group 24F battery instead of a Group 35 battery?

Good Day,

My car is a 2004 Corolla, and it needs a new battery. It has 110,000 miles on the odometer.

The manual calls for a group 35 battery, which is either $100 or $130 for the version with a few more cold cranking amps.

Could I use a group 26R battery or a group 24F battery? They both sell for $55.

Size wise, compared to the group 35 battery, the group 26R battery is:

7/8 inches narrower, length wise
1 1/8 inches shorter

And the group 24F battery is:

1/2 inch longer
1/8 inch taller.

With cold cranking amps, they have:

Group 35 - 650 CCA
Group 26R – 540 CCA
Group 24F – 585 CCA

I did a search and found a discussion about doing the same battery swap, with using a group 26R or 24F battery instead of a group 35 battery on Bob Is The Oil Guy, but the only conclusion the chaps came to was – it should probably work.

I would really like to know for sure, before I buy a new battery.

I am in Bloomington, Indiana. So far, the coldest nights have been around 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thank you much for your help. I sure appreciate it, Anthony 😀

Physically both would probably work (with some fiddling 26R is pretty short and so the hold down strap may need to be modified or a block of wood placed there) but you won't know til you actually try it...............are +ve and -ve terminals on the same end as the the grp 35? Do you know why the big price difference?

seems like 24f won’t work too well due to rubbing with the upper radiator hose

I am going to install an EverStart Maxx 24F Sunday (today is Friday, tomorrow is rain all day) into a 1998 Corolla. No need to worry about upper radiator hose on a '98. I believe the coolant reservoir filler neck is the potential obstacle. It will be tight.

Wonder why Walmart has no Maxx 35s in stock. All the other parts stores have plenty of group 35 batteries (value, mid, and high grade). Probably the fact that the price is much cheaper and the 35 is a popular battery. I know two Walmarts near me had a few 35 Maxx batteries last month. If I only knew then.

I went with the Group 26R battery. The R means the battery posts are reversed from the Group 26 battery, and the same as the Group 35 battery.

The battery hold down bar was now too high. I tried various blocks of wood, but none of them worked. I tried ripping an old towel and using various combinations of strips, until I found the right thickness.

This does not look elegant, but it works just fine. 😀
