2004 Sequoia - Transmission/Differential Fluids

Hi everyone! This is my first post!

I was recently handed down a 2004 Sequoia Limited 4x4. The truck was purchased new and maintained for 16 years by my uncle, an auto and bus mechanic for 30 years. Sadly, he passed away a few months ago at the young age of 54. He and I shared a bond that was more like a son and father. I want to continue taking care of his truck and getting many more miles out of it.

My question is: is it a bad idea to change the transmission fluid and differential fluid at 164,000 miles?

I ask because my uncle changed the transmission fluid twice on the Sequoia. Upon inspecting the transmission fluid dipstick, the fluid still looks clear and red. In regards to the differential fluid, I am not sure about the quality of the fluid.

Since my uncle changed the fluid twice, does anyone think I can take a chance and change the transmission fluid and differential fluid WITHOUT running into issues? Thank you!

I think if he changed it twice you should be fine changing it, and you should continue changing it to extend its life.

I think you should also change the differential fluid. I did the front and rear differential fluid as well as transfer case fluid on my dad's 2007 Tahoe 4x4. I'm glad I did because it needed it. I got an aftermarket trans pan for the 4L60-E transmission (Mag-Hytek) to make drain and fills a lot easier. It also has a Mag-Hytek rear differential cap as well.

I know trucks are different. But I also changed out the fluid (clean pan +filter) on a 2016 Toyota Camry at 125K miles and it runs great.

I'm curious to see what other people say about this.

I have a 2005 Toyota Sequioa 4x4 with 230k. The original owner never changed the Transmission Fluid, when i dropped the pan to check, my year does not have the dip stick to check the quality of the fluid. I ran into issues and had to purchase a new unit from Aisin. If the fluid is clear, IMO you should be fine chaning the fluid. When you change the rear Diff. stay with mobil1 75w140 if its a 4x4, transfer case and front diff you should stay with mobil1 75w90.
