Hi everyone, first of all apologies for any faux pas, this is my first time posting. If I'm posting in the wrong place please let me know.
To cut to the chase, I bought a 2009 Matrix 1.8L (2ZR-FE), and basically got screwed over. Tape over the engine light, ODO rolled back, the whole 9 yards. (so many lessons have been learned.)
Anyway, I get it home (just), and to my horror it has a bunch of engine codes: P0010, P0016, P0351, P0352.
(The guy I bought it from has long since disappeared, so I've resigned myself to just fix the damn thing).
The miss-fire was an easy fix, new coil and new plugs just to be safe. It ran a lot better but still getting a 1 second rattle on cold start and timing codes (P0010, P0016) so I dig a little deeper.
Off comes the valve cover and it turns out the top chain guide has been obliterated. Also the timing is off by one tooth on the intake cam gear.
So now I pull the camshafts, and check the cam phasers using a compressor. Intake seems to work fine (that was my worry seeing as that was the gear that skipped, and also there is a TSB on that side (T-SB-0087-09).
The exhaust phaser doesn't want to move with the compressor but it does have that big spring on it, unlike the intake side. So I figure I'm in for a new one might as well take it apart. Take it apart, give it a clean, and it seems to spin fairly nicely, so I put it all back together, with the chain back to it's correct marks. I also dropped the oil pan and pulled a bunch of broken chain guide bits out of there. Strangely enough, no metal to be found anywhere, not even on the sump plug magnet.
It now runs very well, and I thought I'd sorted everything, but to my dismay the engine light has come back on. Initially P2195 (oxygen sensor B1S1), and later P0138 (oxygen sensor B1S2), and now P0014 (Camshaft B position). Cold start rattle still exists, but runs very smooth after that 1 second.
Sorry for the life story, but I'm at a bit of a loss. I tested the B1S1 O2 sensor with a mutlimeter, as well as the VVT solenoids. Everything seems ok as far as I can tell, but I will admit I'm not an expert on that stuff. I just don't want to throw parts at it, but I'm really struggling to narrow down the actual cause of these codes, and why only now are the O2 sensors acting up. I'm also a bit worried as to why the guide snapped off in the first place.
I really appreciate any and all help! I can post more photos/info if needed.
Thanks,
Will.

This is the crap I pulled out of the sump, all plastic, no metal in sight:
