I'm looking for recent information about upgrading the audio equipment in my 2012 Highlander Base model without JBL and Nav. I would like to use the existing backup camera, not interested in either Apple or Android Play functions, Bluetooth capability is sufficient. I have looked extensively at Crutchfield's offerings; I have been buying from Crutchfield since the 1970's and always pleased with their products and services (yeah, I'm that old). But I would like to learn from those who have firsthand experience with what I would like to do; what other options might be available to to me, both equipment and tech-wise. One more thing: because I'm really old-school, I want a unit with a real volume control knob! Your input will be appreciated!

If it's truly a "base" without the Diversity Antenna system it would be as simply as falling off a rock. Find a unit you like, buy the appropriate adapters, slap it in the hole and you're done. If it's already backup cam equipped just leave all that alone. The existing cam and screen will work perfectly. If the new radio has a large display you want used then look for my thread re installing a second cam "inside" the vehicle as a backup. This arrangement works fantastic! Because in bad weather when the factory cam is covered in scum and sees nothing, a quick swipe of the rear wiper and you see clear as a bell. Additionally if your new "head" is like the one I installed it will also function as a recording cam. Should you get rear ended especially like lately hit then runner, it will record it all and hold that recording for you. Not hard to do either

I installed a Sony display stereo in my non-JBL/Nav Highlander from Crutchfield and I'm really happy with it. It included a Maestro interface unit and wiring to enable the steering controls and backup camera. I could not find a stereo though that had analog volume/tuning controls. Good luck on that search.

Really it's up to you. And what you're looking for re features and pricing. But, I would make sure it's both Android Auto Wireless capable and Apple Car Play Wireless capable or you'll be stuck dealing with wires and such. And make sure that it can be adapted to any steering wheel controls you have in your base edition car. Since IDK what is there.
