2017 Camry SE (Non JBL) Speaker Upgrade

I am looking for some more audio performance out of my 2017 Camry SE with the base 6 speaker non JBL audio system. I still am using the stock head unit with no dedicated amp, and don't want to upgrade the head unit / amp just yet.

Factory system has 2 tweeters in the dash, 2 6x5 door speakers in adapters for a 6x9 cutout, and 2 6x9 2 way rear deck speakers. I am looking to eventually upgrade all of them, although I might do the front 4 and rear 2 separately to space out the cost.

I have done some research but still am not sure of much since this is my first time upgrading car speakers. I know I will likely need physical mounting adapters as well as cable adapters. I would like something that is mostly plug and play, not have to modify anything irreversibly or splice wires etc.

Front dash and door:
I am intending on adding a 6x9 component system and upgrading the door speakers to 6x9s, as well as upgrading the tweeters to match. The component systems I see have a crossover box thing included. Does the factory system has something similar in order to split the audio to the tweeters and door speakers? What would I have to do to install this?

Rear Deck:
Do cars with the base audio system have the mounts for the rear tweeters found in the JBL equipped cars, allowing me to install a component system without adding mounts?
If not, should I go for 2 or 3 way rear deck speakers? I am leaning towards 3 way to add a tweeter of sorts.

I am considering these for the front and rear respectively.

My SE non jbl did not have a spot for tweeters in the rear. I installed components in the front. Bought from Crutchfield so adaptors came with them. I extended 1 wire harness so it would reach the crossover. Check the Crutchfield site, it will show what adaptors are needed for the project.
Because of no mounts, I'll probably avoid components for the back. Did you go with a 3 or 2 way 6x9 speaker for the rear deck? As far as wiring, was the wire you extended under the dash? I'll check crutchfield for the installation advice.
Focal makes great sounding replacement speakers and they will work fine with the OEM head unit, though better with an upgraded Android unit.
I would recommend Crutchfield. Below is what I got.

Focal Inside IS TOY 690
Focal RCX-690
I had looked at crutchfields speaker selection a lot actually, but just linked those from sonic electronix because they had a better price.

I have heard nothing but praise for focal equipment in general, but that component kit is outside of my price range.

I will look at crutchfields selection again.

I went with 2 ways in the back, they need mounting brackets as well.
Metra Online I used this harness for the fronts. I cut the loop and extended the wire to run down to the cross overs which I zip tied underneath the dash. Ran the wires down while the tweeters were out, nice & easy.
I don't always buy from Crutchfield but usually check there to see what additional parts may be needed for the install.

Would 3 way be better, worse, or the same than a similar quality 2 way for this case?

Forgot to update here, I ended up buying Infinity Primus PR9613IS speakers as well as the relevant metra cable/mount adapters.

Expect them to arrive soon and I plan on installing them next Sunday afternoon if it's nice.

Reading reviews these are not very bass heavy speakers, which I actually don't mind since I prefer a balanced sound, and I'm sure it's a huge upgrade from stock.

Any thing I should really know before installing them? I've watched some videos, looks like I just need to remove the c pillar trim and undo some 10s for the rear deck carpet to come up.

I see several have mentioned getting the Primus crossover installed. Several ways to do this, since the door speakers and dash are run to the dash speaker first, and then to the door with factory wiring. The dash speaker has a really simple if any high pass filter built onto the speaker. Not sure what type of adapter you are getting, but it's not going to be quite plug and play. You'll need to insert the crossover in the wiring if you want to use factory wiring.

I installed Infinity Reference components in my 2011 a few months ago. Also a head unit, and laid wires for an amp for everything but for now it's running off the new headunit.

Good luck with them. If all that is being replaced are the door speakers, then ignore the above references for a crossover. Just use the adapter plugs and install the speakers. You may have an issue with leaving the OEM dash speakers connected, might have a better sound quality if you unhook them.

I followed Crutchfield's sheet to get to the rear speakers, and a youtube video. Suggest using a beaker bar under the seat right at the attachment points to pop the seats off, they take a pretty good force to pop them off. I had a trim clip set of plastic pry bars. Might be worth using them on the panels above the deck, mine was pretty hard to get them to release by yanking on the trim itself like I did, a couple were damaged.

Installed them this afternoon.

I did have a bit of trouble when removing the rear deck carpet. I wasn't sure about what I was to pry without damaging anything. The tutorial I watched just said to lift the carpet up and it would unclip. Turns out it does not, the clips detach from the carpet before they unclip. So I had to glue them back on, nothing major.

The Toyota speakers just look so sad versus their replacements. Not even really 6x9s, tiny magnet, all plastic, super light.

I had to use some screws I had lying around to affix the speakers to the brackets, as the brackets did not come with any. The screws that came with the speaker were far too long. Also had to cut a notch in the brackets to get the to the other side of the speaker without pinching them.

Put the stickers on too, +10HP

They are a bit bright sounding, but I messed with the eq a bit and have them closer to where I like them. Significantly better sounding. I think the 3 ways were a good choice since having a tweeter behind me sounds nice.

Thanks for the help!

you just use the tweeter wiring and adapter?
No tweeters here.
I think you'll notice an even nicer improvement when/if you do the front 4
This will come eventually. Not sure if it will be anytime soon, but it will happen.

Also have some other things I want to do with this car, window tint, OEM sport grille, etc

I think you misread the question. WHat factory wires are your 6x9's running off of? Also, there's a setting in the radio for sound, some kind of blending thing I forget what it's called but I can go out and find it. It needs to be disabled once you run aftermarket speakers.

I've been slowly upgrading the sound system, small steps at a time. Great quality of life improvements.

Last month I installed a CarABC wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay module to the factory base entune radio. Has worked flawlessly in both wired and wireless mode.

Yesterday I upgraded the front door speakers. Although it probably was best to upgrade the door and dash speakers as a component system, I am choosing to upgrade the tweeters and door speakers separately.

I purchased more Infinity products, this time Reference REF-6532ex because they were on sale on Crutchfield. I didn't think ~$80 including the required adapters was too bad for them.

They are actually a little smaller than the factory speakers, which are a 6x9 hole but not actually 6x9s. Installing these speakers made a huge improvement to sound quality overall. Absolutely love the sound. Would absolutely reccomend these. Much more noticable improvement than the rear deck speakers.

Overall installation of these door speakers was very easy. Easier than I expected honestly, and much easier than the rear deck. Only annoying part was that I need to invest in a set of clip removal tools instead of winging it with a flathead wrapped in electrical tape.

I intend on upgrading the tweeters to infinity reference at some point. No crossover, just a wiring adapter. The highs are not the most clear right now.
