I was looking at a Land Cruiser, which I would love and I was discussing it, someone hit me with "what is the difference between the Sequia and Land Cruiser. My initial impression was similar to the difference between a 4Runner and a Highlander, but the differences seem slightly smaller since they both run off the same chassis and engine??

Just wanted to reach out and get a real run down of the differences and perhaps some thoughts against the Lexus variant too.

Thanks!

Think Sequoia shares a platform with the Tundra, and Land Cruiser is derived from the Tundra platform but significantly heavier-duty. I remember that except for parts-bin interior components, the mechanical bits of the LC are allegedly built to a 25-year service life.

I see the LX as an uglier Land Cruiser, especially that grille

Do LC's still come fully loaded, no options? Think my parents have a 2009, they got it because they liked the low-profile-ness compared to the LX.

They're all body-on-frame trucks. A 4Runner is BoF, and a Highlander is unibody.

Yep, the 4Runner & Highlander are totally different animals--essentially no comparison except for a similar engine. The Highlander is based on Camry/minivan parts, while the 4Runner is more like a Tacoma with an coil spring rear suspension.

The Sequoia is based on the Tundra pickup and is NOT an off-road beast like the Land Cruiser. It's just a Tundra with an enclosed bed IMHO. You'll note that folks who own Land Cruisers are quite biased.

The LC still comes fully loaded--no options other than stuff like floor mats & wheel locks.

The LX570 is virtually identical to the LC 200 except for trim pieces and a few extra "luxury" items added as a product differentiator and to justify the extra cost. The LC is amazingly well equipped and is a superb off-roader. Only you can determine if the LX is worth the extra cost.

I would recommend doing some research at the Toyota & Lexus web sites, and also visit dealers to see what most appeals to you.

Just had to make this decision and ended up with the LC. Most lexus dealers are loading the LX570 with everything and that gets their price over 99K. come on Lexus, now you know why so many are languishing on the lots for months.

The LC has a great sound system, the Levinson is fantastic, but the JBL is quite good. The LC came with the rear entertainment, lexus charges for the same thing.

Ok, the lexus looks more imposing, but the LC 200 is quite nice(wife loved the robust look :) ). Save the 13K plus and go with the LC, we did.

LC owners are biased. Then again, so is the build quality.

I haven't heard of a LC needing new frames like Sequioa's and Tundras.....

People are amazed when I tell them our 93 Land Cruiser is:
a) a 1993 and is 25 model years old
b) has almost 310k miles

Unsure if this is still something considered an option, I hope you got one with lockers. That is almost always a defining option that's wanted for resale.

Tundras and Sequoias are built in Texas (I think), high production for a very competitive truck and SUV market.

They are pretty good compared to all else in their class. LC/LX570 still built in Japan to compete again RRovers, and Nissan Patrol. Totally different customer base, built at a higher standard with more durable components. We had a 2008 Sequoia, nothing wrong with it, but it is not close to the LC. Wife ended up trading for a 2013 QX80(Patrol chassis) because that was much nicer and in our area not much costlier than the Sequoia limited. Still have it.

My wife drove the test drove the LC 200 before I did, got out and said:" this is better than my Infinity buy it". I said I thought you wanted to test a Rover and Q7?
She said, "not anymore". :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I do love the range rover but the reliability and resale makes me think a land cruiser is the way to go. I guess I need to decide whether New or used makes sense. Was offered 74k on a new one.

I hear 2008+ Range Rovers are loads better than the older ones when it comes to reliability (not that that's hard...ever read Doug DeMuro's articles on Jalopnik?). Of course the parts will still kill you, haha.

Sometimes I see '08-'09 Land Cruisers in great shape around here, they run about 45-55k.
