Hi All

New here at the toyotanation forums. I am thinking of purchasing a 2020 Highlander XLE or Limited. Since its a new redesign, should I be concerned about issues? I really like the interior better and carplay on the 2020 vs 2019. If anyone has any anecdotal experience on pros and cons of purchasing a 2020 vs 2019 that would be greatly appreciated. I guess my question is "how reliable is the 2020 Highlander"?

Thank you!

I think a better question might be, how Reliable is Toyota? Same brand, different look and design. Cons, the 2019 is already 2 years old.

i had the same questions. This was my first Toyota vehicle. The engine is tried and true and been out for many years. A lot of these engines have seen 200-300K. I believe the transmission has also been around. Other than the few complaints about other things you can read about on here, I believe the major parts of the Highlander are a pretty solid bet.

Nobody has enough miles to tell you anything meaningful.......

The gas V6 drive train is a carry over. You need to look at the Gen 3 to see that the engine is solid.

Who knows about the rest. It is all new.......Time will tell.

Many of us buy the "boring" Toyota because they tend to last.

Odds are we did not go wrong with the new Highlander.

I throw in my comment here but it is pertaining to the Hybrid. The Hybrid has a CVT BUT the reliability and durability related comment I want to make is that the Toyota/Lexus CVT is a very very sophisticated and engineered CVT coupled with the hybrid components. It is uniquely all gear/planetary gear design and likely a more costly solution by chosen to do it this way for reasons vs those steel belt CVT used by practically all other makes that offer CVT trans associated with concerns of life and reliability.

Bought the 2020 XLE. 6000 miles. Love it except I have to figure out what's causing a metallic pop or clanging sound (it's only twice but that's twice too many) when placed in reverse.

If anyone here knows anything about this, I'd like to hear about it.

Don’t expect Toyota vehicles to be perfect
They have design flaws and lack equipment compared to other makes
But generally the basic engineering is very sound
They are built right where it matters
Where most customers don’t look
My advice when buying a Toyota is to buy the lowest spec you can tolerate then there is not much to go wrong over and above the basic very soundly engineered vehicle
If you tend to buy limited then try the xle
If you care more about luxury and bells and whistles then buy another brand
