2021 RAV4 Hybrid starts in ICE rather than EV mode

Hi RAVers,

I bought a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid, used, from a dealer in April of this year. It's my first hybrid car, and it took me a long while to get used to its silent start; it always came on in EV mode, rather than the gas engine/ICE. Now that I have become accustomed to the EV start, the car has begun starting in ICE in these last couple of weeks. I am wondering if there is a problem that has caused this change of behavior.

The only clue I have is that the weather has changed in New England; it's cold in the mornings now. The first start is in ICE, but after being driven and shut down, the subsequent starts are in EV. And today, a warm 70° day after a night in the 30s with the car basking in the sun all morning, the car again started in ICE.

Is this a common thing? A problem? Any thoughts welcome, and thanks.

Normal. Even though it was a warm day the coolant temperature was probably still too cold to start in EV mode. Living in New England you might want to get used to the engine starting up. In cold weather it won't be able to switch to EV mode nearly as often since it needs the engine to warm up for heat and to meet emissions requirements..

Like the others have said above :). Another thing to be wary of is that in very hot weather or anything that causes the traction battery to become fairly warm the car will start with the ICE. Make sure the vent filter under the rear driver side seat is clean. Cabin air is drawn through the vent to cool the traction battery. On hot days it might be helpful to run the aircon, even if you feel you don't need it, to cool the cabin air used to cool the traction battery. If the traction battery is too hot or too cold it will nor be used to drive the wheels.
