This was one of my boxes needed to be checked off when I was researching a new vehicle. I drive around 32,000 miles a year and there was no way I was changing a damn belt every 60 to 100,000 miles. I just never understood the benefit of going to a piece of nylon over a tried and true chain. Especially how important the role it has.

 

I totally agree with you, Coupeman. The belts are supposed to be quieter but I have a timing chain in my Camry and don’t have a noise problem. I value having a chain timing belt in my vehicles.

 

Both have their pluses and minuses. You choose your poison and live with it

 

At 300,000 miles,my '88 P/U was making some noise from the timing chain cover area. The chain had almost worn through the side of the cover,but I changed the chain with a timing set,did a valve job and it now has 350.000 an only has normal tappet noise of an old engine,but runs great.

 

like someone said pick your poison, timing chains on modern engines are not without problems, lubrication problems, worn tensioners causing valve interference, hidden water pump failures ruining engines.
