I have a 14 month old 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XSE with 28000 miles driven.
This is my first hybrid car, and for the most part I love it.
Today however, the car simply refused to start.
I had the key fob with me, and when I got in, like normal there was a message displayed on the dash screen:
"Press Brake Pedal and Push Power Switch to Start"
I depressed the brake pedal, pushed the power button, and literally nothing happened. The message on the dash continued to be displayed.
This problem repeated for multiple pushes of the start button, and with two different keys.
I was able to get the issue to go away by manually disengaging the shift lever, and shifting into Neutral. I then shifted back into Park. I actually shifted back and forth a couple of times, trying to figure out what I needed to do to get the car towed to get looked at.
After returning the shift lever to Park, I tried pushing the power button again, and this time the car started like normal.
My question for this group is: Has anyone seen this or similar problems? Does manually shifting the transmission lever/linkage makes sense in this scenario?
It makes sense to me that a park sensor reading would be necessary to start the vehicle, but then again, if this was the problem, I would have expected an error message indicating this.
I will mention this the next time I take the car in for service, but I'm just curious if there is anything more to be concerned about here. Any feedback is appreciated.
