Hello everyone,

I was driving on the highway and got lucky! some rock hit and created a star shaped chip/crack on my windshield by the passenger side. It is a brand new 21 XSE V6 with all safety features so i know replacing it will be very costly. I already made an appointment to be checked with Safelite Glass tomorrow. It says estimate around $1500 to replace the whole windshield and calibration etc without my insurance. With my insurance it would be $500 deductable and maybe more. My concern is if this is the case, should i get it done with Safelite or take it to my dealer to get it done since they are more familiar with the calibration etc? Has anyone had this issue before and how does Satelite installation for these type of windshields?
I also have a touch keypad to lock/unlock the doors by driver side windshield so not really sure that will also something add to cost.

Personally speaking? I go through Toyota.

If it was me personally? I would arrange between the two. Have the reputable shop put it in, and then dealership to finish up the calibration stuff unless for some mad reason that is done prior to/during install.

Main reason I would do this is skill of install. Somebody who does it several times per day vs once every few months.

Talk to dealer and ask who actually puts the glass in. Your dealer probably goes through a third party. This way dealership does all the potential warranty and mechanical stuff like trim, and then you can ensure the actual glass install is done by who you think is the best.

Edit: Another option, even though looks bad, perhaps that bad thing can still be repaired without the insurance ding?

I am hoping it will be repairable but just preparing myself for the worst.

I actually prefer to do it in one stop per insurance purposes so i don`t have to go through two different claims. I know Safelite does calibration but only thing worries me is the smart lock unlock system on the windshield that will also need to be installed again after replacement.

I didn’t know Camrys had touchpad key entry. Do you have buttons to enter a code to open the doors?

Also, I’d be worried about that star crack increasing in size when subjected to daily temperature changes and wind stress at highway speeds. Personally, I would go for an OEM replacement if possible.

Looks like a dealer installed accessory that isn’t standard on a Camry. Based on the video I watched, I think it’s mounted on the inside of the car and the windshield acts like a glass screen protector would on a capacitive phone touchscreen. I think they could change the windshield and then remount that keypad and have it work again. I have no experience with this…these are just my thoughts.

Does your comprehensive insurance not cover anything for windshields?

Assuming your comprehensive deductible is $500, shouldn’t that be the most you have to pay out of pocket towards this repair? Comprehensive claims shouldn’t increase your rates.

Toyota dealer near me will not even use Safelite anymore, too many problems. Ask your local dealer who they have the best luck with and demand Toyota OEM glass, that is what we did thru State Farm. With the Toyota logo on the glass you cannot tell it was ever replaced, they did a perfect job!

BTW, pic shows too much damage to fix, waste of time, it will crack.
