22re - electrical problem - no lights or radio or anything

This is a dumb problem I cant figure out. I am doing a complete rebuild on a 22re - so the motor is out of the truck. Well, I thought I would get busy on installing the radio and new head/tail lights, but even with a new battery when I hook the terminals up I dont get any lights or radio or anything.

The battery is charged (checked it with meter), is there a ground I am missing or what here. I am lost.

I would say it's definately a ground that has been disconnected for engine removal. You should be able to temporarily connect them all to the negative terminal on the battery using a jumper wire. Be sure the body/chassis grounds are connected as well. Be careful doing this as you may have an exposed hot wire lying around somewhere. Also, did you remove any of the wiring haness to pull the engine?

I didnt remove the wiring harness, it is just lying in there. Basically all of the fuel injector and sensor connections are all still together and hooked to the ECU (all are still in the engine bay) There are a couple grounds that i saw but didnt connect to anything so maybe that is the case. You say I should run these up to the batter with some jumper cables?

It's probably not a good idea...

to tempt fate with all the bare wire ends and ungrounded injectors exposed. It would be best to have all the wires/sensors/injectors in their proper places before testing/wiring anything new.

Having said that it's possible to do what you are asking but it would take lots of plastic bags and electrical tape to isolate all those sensors and 12V positive connections. Way more work than necessary.

Better to err on the side of caution than to err on the side of burning something up. Personally, I would wait until the engine is back in. MHO

Very little help but...

I want to wire a Tach also but have no idea where exactly to wire it. I'm guessing it wires on to the distributor. My truck is a 22R Carbed, your 22RE is likely a little different. Anybody else know if either of these motors has wiring in place for an add-on TACH? Thanks!

This is something that the guys at Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or Discount Auto should know enough about to get us started in the right direction.

In fact I'll ask them tomorrow on the way home...

Ok I see what you mean. You're looking at swapping a cluster as opposed to just adding an after market tach.

Yes that's the way to go for sure. I was thinking the parts store employee would likely have some experience with whatever they sell as an add on Tach. They probably wouldn't know anything about our specific truck applications.

I did a little searching along those lines on ebay last night. It looks promising to find the one that would work. Good luck and let us know how it turns out and I'll do the same.
