had to replace a battery today, didnt realize I needed 27f for tow package until I went back to install it. I got a duralast gold 24f battery, it has 40 more cold cranking amps than the stock 27f. Will this be a problem or should I change it out?

Toyota's battery application chart lists both 24F and 27F as acceptable for both Tacoma engines, so the 24F would be fine if you wanted to keep it. The 27F is physically bigger and has more capacity like Dark Taco said.

For a vehicle with tow package, I'd get a 27F, like Dark Taco said, it has a higher reserve. Higher Cold Cranking Amps = Less reserve and if you tow, you'll need the reserve more than you will cold cranking amps.

Where ever you purchased the 24F should carry or can get a 27F, they are not that uncommon. Tundra, Sequoia, Landcrusier and some Lexus' use them, not to mention other vehicles non Toyota.

Why? I tow a boat with my taco but I was scratching my head trying to understand why I would need more reserve over cranking. Maybe if I had electric brakes (which I don't) or liked to run my trailer's electrical devices off the truck (which I don't). The trailers lights do take additional power but I don't use them with the truck turned off so that's on the alternator. Maybe if I was dead on the side of the road with my four way flashers on while towing. That's a lot of ifs.

In the end I went with two more years battery warranty for less money when I decided on the 24F.

Hey partsman, does Johnson Controls still make the 27F? I have a circa 2006 27F - it has the little green eye. Still works great, no problems. When it dies, I'd like to replace it with the same if it still exists....

NO, they don't. The ones that come with the vehicle are by far some of the best batteries, but they are not offered as a replacement, at least not at a dealer. Its a bummer becuase I would put it back in my car if I had the choice.

Interstate makes a real good battery. They are who makes the factory replacement for Toyota. That is what you'd get if you walked into a dealer. However, if it were me, and I have and will continue to do so, I would get an Interstate Mega-tron or better. I have had very good success with them and they last about the same length of time as the original ones do, depending on you geographical location. Extreme Heat and Extreme Cold destroy batteries at a more rapid pace.

I got it at autozone, they dont carry a 27F, anybody know a place that does? going to try an interstate batteries tomorrow, anybody know if they make good batteries?

Towing pakage includes higher output alternator and a higher capacity battery. Both are designed to power up electrical accessories on the trailer as well as the truck itself: lights, stereo, AC fan, electric brakes, trailer batteries, etc.

Your alternator does not pump electricity directly into your car electrical system, it charges up the car battery, and car battery powers up all of your accessories, including anything connected via the 7-way trailer plug, both with the truck running or off.

Smaller capacity battery will need to work harder to keep up with electrical demands. It might not last as long with a a higher capacity battery.
Keep an eye on electrolyte levels. If it is dropping, battery is overheating.

Wow, I had the exact same problem 3 weeks ago and have the exact same replacement battery. The old battery was even taken in by a family member while I was at work so I dont know why they sent them back with a smaller battery. I did not have time to take it back as I was going out of state the next morning for a week. It has been working so far though. As far as towing package though I believe the alternator upgrade is much more important than the battery size because thats whats responsible for keeping the battery from discharging while driving. Only if your sitting without the engine running will the reserve capacity matter. I tow a camper with electric brakes, the refrigerator cooling on 12v, ANOTHER battery mounted on the tongue charging, and lets turn the lights on while we are at it. I have not yet seen the battery light come on in the dash warning that the alternator is not keeping up with demand and the trucks battery is being drained. I find it to be a bit impressive

Kragens/O'Reilly's has the 27f. The part# is actually 27R72J. The part list came up w/ 24f which is 24R72J and the battery was smaller. I showed the guy my stock battery was 27f which listed 710 cranking and 165 reserve.

Went w/ 27R72J instead since it was the same stock size/reserve. My stock battery lasted about 6 years...not bad. $89.99

BTW, Sam's Club sells 27F Energizer battery for $110 including tax. Energizer battery is made by Johnson Controls that I believe also makes Interstate and some other brand batteries. From what I have read Johnson Controls also make the Toyota and Lexus replacement batteries. Lexus sells the 27F for $144 and another person wrote here that one bought at Toyota was $130.
Costco does not carry 27F although they sell Interstate. They used to sell Kirkland brand batteries and people swore by them

Not all aftermarket 27F batteries are the same size. Most are a little taller than the OEM battery. I'm on my 4th battery and they all needed my little custom made extender for the back J hook rod to work.
