2zz Swap into 04 Corolla S: Passenger Side CV Axle

Hey y’all,

I’m currently doing a 2zz swap into my 04 Corolla and just about completing it. I have a question about the passenger side cv axle that my research hasn’t answered yet. I don’t have the carrier bearing bracket and bought the XRS cv axles. Is it okay / safe to run it without the carrier bearing? Should I switch back to the oem 2004 axle? Would it be better to add the carrier bracket? I would need to buy one or the other but I’m overthinking it lol.

I had the C60 with the 1zz prior to the swap and it was running fine. But I thought the 2zz needed the xrs axles. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Thank you!

The bracket is to hold the carrier bearing, which is required for equal-length driveshafts. Equal-length driveshafts are to minimise torque-steer, not vibration. If you don't have the carrier bearing bracket then run the old unequal-length driveshafts, otherwise you'll be putting a lot of load on the diff output bearing seal on that side, not to mention the inner tripod joint flopping around (which will cause a lot of vibration).

1ZZs have unequal shafts and no support/carrier bearing. 2ZZs have equal-length shafts and carrier bearing. You can run unequal-length shafts on the 2ZZ if the bracket is removed, but you can't run equal-length shafts on the 1ZZ as there are no holes tapped on the block for the bracket (except I believe on the Celica and MR2 1ZZs, which had equal-length shafts). And you can't run equal-length shafts without the carrier (well, physically you can but it is a very bad idea)

How's it. If your 2ZZ block has the studs installed, they will tear through the boot of a single piece driveshaft. If not, you should be good to go with C59(?) axles but don't quote me on that. Parts store's should show the option for a single piece CV, that's what got put on my XRS but it had studs and the boot tore instantly. Thank you shitty two letter hexagon automotive in Peoria, Arizona. If you have studs, you'll need to order the carrier bracket and nuts, and you should be able to order the two piece CV from Oreilly's.
