Wanted to reach out with an update on our 1995 Corolla (Base, 1.6L, automatic transmission).

A) Recently, on my birthday, I took our car for a grand opening special at a new branch of a tire and auto chain ($19.99 for a full synthetic oil change). Anyway, It was over 105 degrees outside and I didn't check the dipstick when they were done - just drove the car home (about 15 miles). Car drove normally, except for the speedometer not working). Parked the car for 2 days until my son asked to use it. It wouldn't start?? I went out and it wouldn't start unless I put the gas pedal to the floor and held it - but it would die immediately after taking my foot off the gas. It ran great before the trip to the oil change place so I checked the oil. The oil dipstick showed almost TWICE the amount that should have been in the car!! :(((

Long story short, I contacted the oil change place - they said to tow it in on my dime and they would look at it - after denying that adding too much extra oil would cause a no start. Then they said their machine wouldn't make a mistake because they punch in the vin number and it automatically dispenses the correct amount of oil for that vehicle. Came here and got the correct info, including that too much oil could definitely cause harm to the motor. It was the Labor Day weekend so the place wasn't open anyway so my son came and used a fluid extractor to pull all the oil (from the dipstick hole) Out came 5-1/4 quarts - for an engine that only takes 3.2 quarts!!! The oil was basically brown/black which I wouldn't expect for new oil. Anyway, we put in 3 quarts back in the engine, and the dipstick showed the correct level.

Tried to start the car & again the car wouldn't start without holding the gas pedal down. Once we got it started we held it at a low idle by keeping the gas pedal depressed. After about 5 minutes we turned it off., waited 5 minutes, and then started it again. This time it started as normal, and idled as normal for another 5 minutes. Went out a few hours later and the car started and ran normally again. Hopefully we dodged the bullet (of serious engine damage). I will keep folks here posted about the car if we have any more problems.

B1) We have a 1.6L engine so I'm told that in in our model the speedometer not working (until we hit about 50 MPH) won't effect our transmission shifting. However, I intend to let our youngest daughter use the car so I would like to have the speedometer working. I have seen tons of videos that show to change out 3 capacitors on the back of the speedometer to fix the problem. The 3 capacitors are: A) 25V 100uF United Chemi-Con Series KMA 105C > Panasonic 25V 100uF EEU-FC1E101SB, B) 25V 22uF United Chemi-Con 105C (no series marking) > Panasonic 25V 22uF EEA-FC1E220, and C) 25V 6.8uF Matsushita Series KG 105C > Panasonic 35V 6.8uF EEA-GA1V6R8. I can get the 100uF and the 22uF pretty quick, but I am wondering if I can use a 50volt 6.8uF capacitor instead of a 25 volt 6.8uF capacitor?

B2) Most of the dash bulbs are out so I was thinking about changing/replacing them with LED bulbs (since I'm taking the instrument cluster out to fix the speedometer anyway). Anyone have any suggestions on which bulbs to get? Do they have to be polarized! **Also, I saw one YouTube video where a guy said NOT to replace/change one of the bulbs out with LED because it will just stay on?? Anyone know about this?

C) I just wanted to say THANKS to everyone here. I'm a disabled senior stuck at home, & I don't really go any place by myself (going to the oil change place was a BIG day for me). I have a balance problem, among other problems, and I can't do much without falling, but I still want to pull my weight around here - at least as best I can. I guess it's the way I was raised - everybody did their part. So when a problem comes up that I think I can do, ESPECIALLY WITH THE HELP I RECEIVE FROM YOU FOLKS HERE, I am quick to try and take care of it. I don't know if anyone here knows what I'm what I'm talking about but it's horrible to feel useless! I can't tell you how many times I've come here and got information from other people's posts, or answers to my own posts, which have helped me fix something. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone here. As always, thanks in advance to all who offer suggestions and advice on the speedometer capacitor question and the instrument cluster LED question.

P.S. I included some pictures showing the high level of oil shown on the dipstick, and the 2-1/2 liters pulled out of the engine (3 liter fluid extractor, shows about 2-1/2 liters = about 5-1/2 quarts

That sucks about the oil situation. I hope you don't have any problems going forward.

As to the cluster bulbs, I would just put regular 194s in there. I replaced all of them in my now junked 94'Ranger after a few started to burn out. I ordered the cheapest I could find on Rockaurto and 12 years later they were all still lit. I drove 90% in the dark as I worked the graveyard shift. So I don't see new ones burning out for a long time. Anything on the dash LED is too bright for my liking.

As for your capacitor question, I don't know. I would look into Mouser and see what you can order.

Where do you reside in California?

It’s great to know that the issue is resolved for the most part. I don’t believe any shop that says the equipment is tied to a vin number and can automatically fill and stop. 5 quarts is excessive and anyone with brains would double check the book.

I can relate when you say “useless”. Except in my case, everything that is wrong is blamed on me even if it has nothing to do with me. Pitching in is what I do, don’t take credit for all of it, but would be nice to be appreciated once in a while.

That just means they put the wrong oil in the wrong car, there's someone out there that takes 5.5qt running around with only 3.2qt! The computer might not be wrong, but their employees sure can be and clearly were NOT re-checking oil levels when cars left. That or they just added oil and never drained yours.

Thanks everybody! I have the capacitors on their way and will take care of that next. Also to 75aces: my wife of (40 years) does her spring cleaning 2 or 3 times a year I always make myself scarce because my wife gets rid of stuff she thinks she doesn't need or is useless.

Many, many years ago, my own dad in his really old years, couldn't walk much, couldn't see well, couldn't hear with one ear (like me) and really couldn't do much. But it didn't matter! As kids he would always let us help push the lawn mower, or put us on a ladder to change a light, etc. When he got to be so old and infirmed, we would come over and he would let us help again - but we were really doing almost all of the job. It saved his dignity to feel like he contributed, even if only a small way. Dad would have a list of things that he knew needed to be done and would never ask for help. He was always amazed that one of us (7 kids) would always show up on the days that dad was going to do something on his list. I don't think he ever knew my mom would call us ahead of time to let one of us know dad was planning a job/task/project.

We asked our mom once why they never called in a local handyman or hired a gardener. My mom told us that she and our dad grew up in the depression and learned to do things themselves. I guess some of this attitude carried over to my brothers/sisters and I, and now that we're old, or own kids sometimes think we're being stubborn & foolish not to hire outside help (I wouldn't do it even if we could afford it). So I come here and almost always get the help I need! Thanks again!
