Hello,

I live in Jakarta - Indonesia. I have some questions that maybe anybody in this forum could answer.

I own 1996 Toyota Corona FWD manual trans with 3S engine 16 valves DOHC 2.0 liter. 3S is what the engine type written on the tag in the engine compartment. My questions are :

- Do 3S & 3S-FE the same in dimension ?

- Is it possible to install a turbocharger unit with stock engine internals ?

- Does the original transmission need to be replaced and what type is strong enough ?

Your reply would be appreciated. Thank you.

you can use the 3s-gte turbo manifold off a celica gt4 or a mr2 turbo ...

If its safe it depends on what 3s you ... is it a 3s-ge or 3s-fe ??? I know the 3s-ge comes with a higher compression than the 3s-fe....

3S = 3rd gen S block

F = narrow valve angle (22 degrees).

E = EFI

3S-FE, 3S-GE, and 3S-GTE all share the same block (3rd gen S block). However the cylinder head and internals are different on each engine.

Is your current tranny automatic or manual?

Thank you for your kind replies.

3S is what I found on the tag in the engine compartment, but I am sure it is a 3S-FE.

The transmission is manual.

- If the engine internals stay stock, how much boost the engine could stand ?

- What kind of turbo compressor, wastegate, blow off valve (brands)that cand be installed on ?

- Does the head need porting / polishing ?

- How much HP the turbocharged 3S-FE (stock internals) gain ?

- What engine internals that need to be replaced to gain 10 psi ?

Thank you

Can you get a picture of it and post it up?

If you can do that, we can tell you what engine you have.

To be safe I'd say nomore then 7psi or so.

I was using a Garrett / AiResearch T3 (40 trim compressor) with my turbocharged 3S-FE.

If you use anything other then a Toyota CT-26 you'll need a adapter. This is if you use the stock manifold off a 3S-GTE.

T3's have a internal wastegate, so I didn't need to worry about that. However you can use a external wastegate, I recommend HKS or Tial.

For a blow off valve I was using a Blitz super sound (the older one with the big horn). What you use is up to you.

- Does the head need porting / polishing ?
No.

- How much HP the turbocharged 3S-FE (stock internals) gain ?
Hard to say.

88 LE,

Thank you but I dont know how to post the picture on this forum. Maybe via your email.

I just found a pictures on the net of 3S-FE that really look the same as mine. Now I am sure it is 3S-FE.

- Did you replace the stock injectors with the bigger one, if yes what type are they ?

- can I use stock ECU ?

I havent read all of the posts so someone probably already mentioned this. Your best bet is to get a 3SGTE cylinder head and 3SGTE pistons (for the lower compression) and once the pistons are in the cylinder head bolts directly on with the correct valve clearance because the FE and GE block is the same. The GE/GTE head will give you a wider valve angle (somewhere around 50, and this will give you better flow). then just throw on a performance GTE turbo extractor or the stock one, and I suggest you run a toyota CT26 turbocharger. This is what their rally cars and such used. If you want a less expensive less performing and probably less reliable, just use the stock FE pistons and cylinder head, and put a stock GTE turbo manifold and some turbo running at low PSI.
P.S. Make sure you get an oil cooler and GOOD stainless oil lines. Good LUCK!!

Yeah I did forget ECU. Which is quite important. But really you would have to change the ignition? I believe you but I did not know this, maby a hot coil yes but wow didnt know that. Now the ECU you could just run a GTE ECU if you ran with GTE head and pistons right? Guess if you were to do all of this may just want to get a donner motor, and if you get a donner motor why not just swap that in... Wow boy theres just some of the beauties of carbs I guess. But I suggest you follow his info not mine. Good Luck!

The dizzy won't work from the F engine and vice-versa, and since you're changing that, the coil and ignitor must be changed too. You probably wouldn't want to run GTE pistons, the compression would be so low that driving off boost would be horrible. Like he said, you're better off doing the swap, unless you've got a whole lot of cash and some big dreams.

You have made the 1 millionth person, congratualation, who has tolds me the same thing. But I can't do that. This is my only and everyday ride. My son is a diabetic. I need the car everyday, you never know when an emergancy can happen. I stock up on parts, then in the summer [when he goes to LA] I I install everthing. I know a person on the net that is doing this swamp. Andrew Green from OZ. He has a hell of a time doing this with unexpected problems. It's not a clean swamp. It's a pain in the but :bash:

Yea, but a fellow RAV4world.com member Andrew Green from Australia is installing a 3SGTE engine in his RAV4. It has been a long wait. If you are planning to install it on your everyday ride. Get your CC out you will need Hertz. With many, and I mean many unexpected problems. It is not just a drop and go. It has been a ruff ride and an adventure for him, believe me.:hammer:
