Sorry this is a noob question, but what is meant by 4.5 gen? I know of 4th and 5th generation... but what is 4.5?

It refers to a minor facelift. Not sure exactly what changed from 4 to 4.5, but usually stuff like grills, lights, minor things like that.
Gen 4 is 97-99, 4.5 is 00-01. Idk about the v6 off hand but the I4 got a slight bump in HP from 133 to 136. The 4.5 got a front and rear facelift. Mainly on the headlight the Gen 4 had a dual filiment bulb for hi and lo beam and the 4.5 had seperate bulbs. The rear tail lights were changed as well. On the Gen 4 the brake lights were on the corner lamps and the 3rd brake light on the inside and the Gen 4.5 used the lights on the trunk as well. Something small but the side mouldings are wider on the 4.5 and I know the inside cloth quality was improved as well. Gen 4.5 also had gallery series and a collector's edition for 01 only. Basically they were le's with special badging in the exterior front fender, badged floor mats, dual power front seats also with leather (normally on xle I believe but were extra?) Sunroof, special paint combos etc. Basically little goodies that normally were only available on the xles but on a le. (Kinda like the release series for scion) interior wise the clock on the Gen 4 had a 00 reset button and hr and min. Gen 4.5 had a mode button instead of the 00 and you could cycle through outside temp in C and F and clock courtesy of the temp probe by the front fender . The only other thing I know of is the outside air /recirculate on the 4 was a level and the 4.5 was changes to a button. I'm sure there's other little things but I'm typing this on my phone and need to get to bed cause I have to be at work at 8 >.< I hope I answered some if your ?

But basically, as mentiond allready, 97-99 is gen 4, 00-01 is a slightly upgraded gen 4, therefor called gen 4.5.

Yea similar to gen 5 and 5.5 
Gen 5 2002-2004 Gen 5.5 2005-2006 main difference that's noticeable if ur behind a Gen 5 to tell is the gen 5 on the tail light had a red turn signal at the top, clear back up lense in the middle and red brake light at the bottom. Gen 5.5 had clear turn signal at top, red brake light in middle and clear back up at the bottom
