Hello! My apologies if this has been discussed before, but I haven't been able to find a definite answer on my own. I'm wondering what years of the 4afe engine will directly interchange. I have an '89 corolla all-trac, and it needs a new engine. Am I limited to finding one from the 89-92 gen? or will a 93-97 4afe work as well?

88-92 would work. I don't think there were any significant changes between those years. There were a lot of changes in 93, so you would need the new computer and harness. And 96-97 there were even more changes because of OBD-II.

You need a first generation 4A-FE. There is some overlap when Toyota had 1st & 2nd generation 4A-FE's in the US market in the same model year, so be aware of that. The second generation 4A-FE started showing up in the US in 1993 for the 1994 model year vehicles. You know what your first gen 4A-FE looks like. The 2nd gen 4A-FE looks a lot different on the outside, and it is also much different on the inside, and your wiring/ECU won't match up. Also, the Celica 4A-FE's used in 1990-1993 model years had an EGR system - I don't think Corolla 4A-FE's in that same period had the EGR system. I remember replacing my 1990 Celica 4A-FE engine with one from a Corolla of the same year, and the head was different because of the EGR not ported into the intake runner like the Celica's was. Although not having EGR wasn't a negative with the swap. But if you are in an emission's inspection state, you should be aware of this unique difference.
