89 pickup won't start

Greetings - we are in a pickle. I'm not much of a mechanic and have been reading the Haynes manual and can't figure it out.

My son slid off the road in the ice and now the truck won't start. It was running when he called me to come and get him and he turned it off to wait for me. Now it won't start.

89 Toyota 2x2 truck, 4 cyl, carb, manual tranny.

Wasn't getting spark, so replaced distributor cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, coil.

Discovered tonight mechanical fuel pump isn't pumping fuel and the rotor doesn't turn when it's turned over.

My fear is that the timing chain broke -any suggestions?

Thanks - Doug

If the rotor doesn't turn, I suspect you're right about the timing chain. You can easily confirm this by removing the valve/rocker cover and inspecting the chain. I would also shine a light down in there and see if you can tell if one or both of the timing chain guides broke, causing slack in the chain and ultimately the chain to fail. They often break on start up so it is not unusual to me to hear "it was running fine then wouldn't start". While you're there, look to see if there is a groove worn in the side of the timing cover from the chain. That may give you some indication as to how long the guides were broken.

Did the motor sound noisey prior to this happening?

Unfortunately, maybe you already know this if you searched it, these are interference engines. So, the valves likely have contacted the pistons and at a minimum caused some valve damage. If that is the case, it will be fairly obvious when you tear down the engine.

It is possible to replace the timing chain without removing the head. I would not recommend that method for you since you will need to know if the valves did indeed contact the pistons.

Sorry to be the bearer, or at least confirmer, of bad news.

Good luck.

I really appreciate the help

Unfortunately, I think that this is a bit beyond my abilities and will have to take it to the shop.
Knowing your abilities is a tough fight sometimes.

I wouldn't be surprised if you find that the timing chain broke, and needs replacement along with a valve or three.

IF you know a trusted mechanic, let em have it. I'd guess you'll looking at $500-$1200 depending on what's needed. You'll be getting close to the price of a motor swap at the upper end.

good luck, keep us posted.

1991 Toyota PU Timing Chain

Howdy--noob here.

Is there a step-by-step somewhere for replacing the timing chain on the '91 p/u I just bought...I think it's doing alright (haven't taken anything apart yet), but I also think it's due for a change--it's at 166k mi, and the guy who had it for the past 50k said he didn't change it.

Short version: I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, if I have clear directions...is it something I could tackle, or do I get to throw some $$ at a shop somewhere?

Thanks,

DM
