I'm told that my 90 camry v6 steering column u-joint has to much slop as they replace my rack-n-pinion. What is the reliability of this part since they are getting it from rockauto? Does it typically go bad?

They mean the yoke, most likely.
don't get it from RockAuto. Chinese junk. Toyota still sells it new. The old one lasted 34 years.
