I just purchased a '91 Previa. The rear hatch won't unlock. Does anyone have a sugestion on fixing or replacing it. The key turns freely in the lock, but the door won't open.

Thanks,
Brooke

This happens at the salvage yards to me... the doors are locked and the battery has been pulld and no keys.
I crawl through to the back and pull off the back door panel. You will most likely break some of the mounts, but you will still be able to remount it after later using the ones that are left.. after you have the panel off, you can reach the mechanism from the inside to unlock it and open it. From there, you will have to figure out exactly what the issue is.. most likely the rod that goes from the key part of the lock has become unattatched from the lock mechanism itself, but that wouldn't affect the lock not being able to be controlled by the electric locks, so you will just have to trace it all and figure it out once you have it open...

I have to admit that I have never really gotton into the power steering system other than removing the pump out of a van that I was parting out. But from what I do know, it is a pretty simple and common system.. the SAD turns the pully that drives the belt that runs the pump that circulates the fluid through the rack and pinnion system... i am betting that either the pump or rack is bad. There is a Very small possability that the system was cleared so that it would act as a manual steering system to save on fuel. ( but I would think that there wouln't be any fluid in the system at all if this were the case )

sorry this isn't helpful, but I just don't know....
Maybe if you did a little more looking into it, and report back we all might be able to figure it out, but i would start a new thread with the correct subject.

Brooke, my power steering belt failed around 240K miles. Yes, that was the OEM belt. The rubber grooves had given away to the material underneath which was a felt like material. Once the deterioration was to this point the squeaking stopped and hard steering began. What was happening was the pulley was slipping on the felt material and with no friction material left there was no grip on the pulley in order to turn it. Therefore no fluid was being pumped. I changed the belt and all was well. However, there was a thread about changing the fluid in the system to ambush internal failure due to dirty, contaminated fluid. Always check the simple things first.
