Hi, I recently purchased a 1992 Sprinter Carib, or Corolla All Trac in North America. The previous owner threw a rod through the block of the 4A-FE that was originally in it and replaced it with a JDM 5A-FE. It runs and drives fairly nicely as it is, but it does have a few small problems I would like to fix.

1- Throttle Position sensor is not connected. I found an engine wiring diagram for the 4A-FE and connected what I *think* are the correct wires to the plug on the 5A-FE TPS. Idles fine, but throttle cuts out around 2000rpm. Has anyone encountered this before?

2- Idle Speed Control valve isn't connected. PO said there were no wires for it in the harness for the 4A-FE so he couldn't connect it. Car idles a little rough for the first minute or so when cold, and at about 1500rpm when warmed up. I can't seem to find anything in the wiring diagram for the 4A-FE about an ISCV either, so maybe they didn't have one.

3- Coolant Temp gauge isn't working, I think it's just not connected. I found the wire with spade connector end in the engine bay near the thermostat housing, but there doesn't seem to be a sensor there for it to plug in to. Does anyone know where the Coolant Temp Gauge sensor is located? Is it in the the back of the head?

Besides those few small issues, the car is great. Body is in 7/10 condition, and the interior is 8/10 but I got it for a steal :D Handles much better in the snow than my volvo 245. If anyone has any advice on the above problems I would greatly appreciate it!

No, it came with a 4A-FHE, says right on the plate in the engine bay. Chassis code for a Sprinter Carib is AE-95 as well. I've got it idling a lot better now. I cleaned the ISCV and it doesn't have a rough idle when cold anymore. 1500rpm when warmed up still seems really high to me.

4DoorGTS, Well I have a Corolla SR5(AE92) and factory it has a 4af, and every other corolla owner ive talked to with the ae92 usually has the 4afe or 4age. This is for north america that is. and i believe stumeston is located in canada. and the ones i was scavenging from the junkyard all where 4A series. japan probably was only one that had 5A series. Stumeston let me know how that TPS works, im kinda curious as to how it would work.

The new tps I bought didn't end up working, wouldn't fit the throttle body. But I did manage to get the 4 wire tps to work with the 3 wire tps wiring. Just had to rearrange the pins in the plug for the 4 wire tps and it works great. Throttle response and idle both seem much better than without the tps.
