Howdy folks! I'm new to the forum. I've been searching the web to find a solution for my problem and decided this would be a good place to look.
Last summer my 16 year old son purchased a 93 4Runner from my brother in law for $1000. It had a loss of power. He had put a bunch of money in it and was fed up with it so he bought a new truck. We did a compression check and found a bad exhaust valve on the #3 cylinder. We decided that we would fix it and sell it so he could make some money on it and learn how to work on cars.
So we pulled the head and had the valve replaced and all valves adjusted on that head. Put it all back togther and it started right up fine. Adjusted the timing and it purred like a kitten. Then we had to fix other things like AC leak and charge, PS pump leak, short in alarm system, etc.
So we finally get ready to sell it and the head gasket on the driver's side starts gushing coolant out the back. I pulled the head off and replaced it. We put it all back together and went to start it and it barely started and ran rough. I tried adjusting the timing and got it a little better but it would barely stay running at idle. At partial throttle it would run OK but I didn't drive it.
It sounded like the engine timing might have been off so we pulled the timing cover and noticed that when we were at TDC on the crank timing light mark on the lower plastic cover that the camshaft marks were about a half tooth past the marks on the back timimg cover. So we pulled the belt and lined all marks up exactly. I didn't pull the crank pulley. I used the timing light marks on the bottom cover.
I turned it around by hand a few times and everything was OK. We got it to the point where we could start it and it started up fine at first. Then immediately started running rough like it did before. We did this with the upper timing cover off.
When we looked at the timing marks again the camshaft marks were about half a tooth before the marks on the back timing cover. When I line up the camshaft timing marks the timing mark on the crank shows 5 degrees past TDC. If I adjust the timing to 15 degrees before TDC it will idle although kinda rough.
Has anyone seen or heard of this problem?
We had the marks all perfectly lined up and once we start it they are off.
I did notice that when we had the cam pulleys off and were putting them back on that there was some sideways play in them. It's like the dowel pin didn't fit tight in the slot. I was a little concerned but figured it must be OK since I had done nothing with it.
I saw another post just like this somewhere but no one had replied to it and it was really old.
It's like either the cam shaft sprockets are moving due to this play or maybe the crank pulley has moved somehow. What gets me is the first time I did the other head I didn't have these problems. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.
