95 Camry Intermittent Low Idle on Cold Start

My 95 sometimes starts up and I have to hold the gas pedal down when the engine is cold or else it dies. It does it when the engine is cold, not necessarily when the outside air temp is cold and it doesn't do this every time. It started with only 1 time about 2 months ago and now it is becoming more common.

I can get the eng speed to work properly by either pushing my A/C button on for a short time or by using one foot on the gas pedal to keep the RPMs up and then quickly shift into R and then after this it works normal. Occasionally it will idle around 1000-1200 on start up and then after a short bit of driving, settle back to around 800 RPM.

I've read thru some of the threads already and I've seen suggestions on cleaning the IAC, TB, PCV Valve, checking the ECT, etc. I just want to run this by someone to see if this info might point to something more specific than a dirty this or that (although it wouldn't hurt to clean all of those components - and I will).

Does anyone have any wisdom for me on this issue?

My 2000 camry had the same symptoms of which you speak. At first, once in a while, when I tried to start the 2.2L 4-cyl, the engine would barely catch, cough a bit, sputter and die out. Upon second try, the engine would start OK. As time went on, the engine would do this every time I tried to start it. In desperation, I checked everything I could get my hands (or meter) on. Oxygen sensors, temperature sensors .... no relief. I then decided to clean the IAC valve with some Gum Out carburator cleaner. Just like magic, the problem immediately was resolved. The procedure is really simple and the IAC valve is easily accessible through the opening of the throttle body. A few squirts and the problem was solved. Since the procedure is so simple (just Google "cleaning Camry IAC valve" and you can get simple instructions), you may want to give it a try.:) :) :)
