A lot of people complaining about bad smell from air vents, especially when A/C works or right after A/C shut off. There is many ways to fix “bad breath”. I tried 3 different, only one worked.
I bought used 2007 Camry some time ago. My previous 2001 Camry didn’t smell at all, this one didn’t smell too. But first 3-4 min after you turn A/C on and much longer after A/C shut off, bad smell was coming from vents.
Cabin filter and vent was perfectly clean, but I changed filter any way. Didn’t help at all. I tried to clean evaporator with A/C cleaner from AutoZone-two days later same odor was back.”High performance” stuff from Orally didn’t work easer. So I was $45 down and no result.
I called dealer ,they discontinued to sell A/C cleaning stuff to public, but offered to fix bad smell for $140.Sorry cannot afford it.
About two month ago, searching something on TN, spotted treads about same problem. Most people were referring to BG cleaner for A/C. Spoke to mechanic; he confirmed it, BG-works.
FRIGI-FRESH I could’ve get easy, but I didn’t want to just put fresh smell on top of bad one, I wanted to kill mildew first with FRIGI –CLEANER. Was kind a challenge to find that thing thought. Eventually, I bought BG FRIGI CLEAN /FRESH kit from eBay, for less than $30!
Factory instruction suggests to drill a hall in evaporator case, but I used drainage opening to fill up case with foam without getting under the car. On my Camry was very easy to disconnect drainage hose on evaporator case after I removed glove box panel. After cleaning, I used refreshener, which came with cleaner. It took me around 30 min total.
No foam was coming from vents this time, I didn’t have to clean anything-big difference compare my last year experience with other cleaners.
Result: one month after cleaning and using A/C –fresh air only! Mildew smell gone.
I would like to give advice to others with same problem: if you’ll try to save 10-15,you’ll ended up like me, paying more.
BG Frigi-clean and frigid-fresh works.
Sorry if my tread waste of time for some people, but it sure will help someone else.
