AC Compressor clutch

My son's 1998 Avalon AC hasn't worked for a year- just blew warm air. A month ago the AC fuse blew. Replaced it and it blew again. Unplugged the AC clutch lead and no more blowing fuse. However now the clutch is making a loud groaning noise. Sprayed some penetrating oil in the side and it quieted down but it is running hot. The car is kind of beat up so I don't want to put much money into it. I can't find a bypass pulley for this car. Can I remove the compressor and use a shorter belt? How do I determine the new belt length? Can I use a Camry V6 belt without AC?

I wouldn't see why not. The Camry and avalon use the same drive belts so it should work. I'd give you length, but I don't have it.

have you checked for used A/C compressors?
