i just got a 2016 LE+ AWD. The mileage isn't as great as I hope. I got 15 MPG from 30% highway, 70% city.
On 100% highway at 65 mph, I get about 21MPG, still 12% lower than the rated value. how is your highlander mpg?

#1 - How are you determining your gas mileage? Readout or actually calculating it by dividing miles driven by gallons used when you fill up?

#2 - If you live in the North the advent of winter blend gas has a lot to do with decreased gas mileage. Expect an easy 10% decrease.

#3 - How are you driving? Rabbit starts and excessive highway speed drastically decreases gas mileage.

#4 - Engines usually need a few thousand miles to break-in. By your first oil change gas mileage should increase.

During the summer my gas mileage is very close to the rating. At times I've exceeded the EPA estimates. Now it's winter and winter blend, I'm down to about 22 highway and 18 overall.

Yes, I track the mpg manually when fill up.

Live in Seattle area, not sure if the gas is winter blend. But I am sure it has up to 10% ethanol

I am pretty light on feet. I do notice from computer screen, MPG drops sharply on acceleration, like 5 mpg when engine is at 2500 RPM.

The car is at 600 mi, break-in mileage per the manual.

Thanks for the information. I will wait and see.

I didn't buy my HL for gas mileage, i bought it to tow my boat and have room for 5 (the third row has been down since i picked it up from dealer), and if i really need room i will put the second row down as well. I also have AWD because i live in Canada.
If you are looking for gas mileage, there are plenty of cars NOT costing $40 large that will get double the mileage at half the cost. Do you know what my mileage is ? I don't know and i don't care, I'm driving a vehicle that suits my needs and gets twice the mileage of my previous vehicle. I will never complain about this vehicle because i like the quality, ride, mileage and performance, it could be worse, i could be still driving GM after 39 years !

I've kept fuel mileage stats since the first tank. I've averaged just a fraction over 20 MPG for all kinds of driving, including towing a trailer that drops mileage into the sub-teens. These things really suck gas when you push the go pedal, Winter blend fuel doesn't help, either. You should see better as your new engine loosens up over time.

Yeah my first tank around town was about 17 mpg. Give it a few tanks to break the engine in. On my Odyssey I'd see the mpg drop from ~19.5 to 18.5 going from summer to winter here in NC. I'm just hoping the mpg is the same as the minivan - they weigh about the same and the HL has an extra gear to make up for the AWD. Glad I'm not having to buy premium with the alternatives we were looking at (MDX / XC90).

Gas mileage was one of my criteria. There are plenty of vehicles that can tow my pop-up...but I don't need an Expedition with a Large V8 to do so. And since wife and I are almost empty nesters...I bought the best vehicle that could tow my trailer that we both comfortable in. Since we do have two kids at home every once in a while...the Rav4 was too small.

Our first tank on our 2016 XLE was around 18 MPG with mixed driving. We still drive a 2001 V6 AWD Highlander, and the best we ever got on the highway was 22, with 21 being the average. In town, the 2001 ranges from 15-17 in stop-and-go traffic and short distances. Keep track after each fill up, and you'll start to see how your driving habits impact your mileage. We can squeeze an extra MPG or 2 from the old HL by driving it slow and easy, but that's difficult because it still drives like new and is fast and smooth!

I forgot to mention that I have just a hair over 23k miles on our 2015 HL XLE, which includes a California to Florida and back trip this Summer - those miles add up in a hurry - and towing an empty 14' toy hauler back from Az at the end of December. Over all avg mpg is 20.2. My best avg. for a tank was 25.0 mpg during the trip back from Florida - all of my results are calculated, not taken from the truck's computer (which is always a few tenths on the optimistic side). And though I take my time getting to speed, I tend to drive fast on the open road, cruising at 85 mph is routine where it is safe to do so.

Our '15 HL XLE AWD is closing in on 12K miles. Our long-term average fuel economy is 19.9 mpg. We've seen as low as 13, and as high as 28 (all calculated).

The EPA spec is 18 city / 24 hwy / 20 combined. We're on the low side for "city", on the high side for "hwy", and right on spec for combined.

We have tracked every tank since new with Fuelly and averaged 20.0 mpg over 14k miles. Relatively mixed mountain/highway/freeway driving.
I keep a log book in my vehicle to track log all fillup/gas mileage and all maintenance. Been doing that since 1974.

About 5 years ago I wrote an app for my PC to keep it for me. Just a small windows app with a Sql Server database. I went back and added all the data of all my vehicles into it. Every now and then I spend some time making improvements....Added reporting to show reports on different things like Gas mileage and repairs.

I wonder if there's a way to read the data from the OBD slot and update via bluetooth? Sorry for the aside...
No....OBD wouldn't know how much gas you put in the tank at fill-up. I'd have to use the average mileage reading which I found to very inaccurate. At times it's right on....other times it's way off due to things like wind or driving on hills or rainy/snow. Those things don't measure gas used...it ESTIMATES gas used based on a series of algorithms.

Also wouldn't keep track of maintenance...new tires...brake pads, air-filters...etc.

Consistently get 21 mpg readings here in SC with 14 Hl Ltd on flat roads with 80% driving at 45-60, remainder mild city. Don't really get on it, smooth driving habits. I've noticed in my last 3 cars, mpg improvements are realized between 15-20k miles. Like some have said, it's all about "driving habits". People that get poor mileage usually go through brake pads early also...2 negatives.

You beat me by a few years. Of course back then your gas mileage was a good way to tell if something was out of whack with your engine (timing, carburetor, etc). Now it seems the ECU pretty much takes care of everything and tells you when something is up.
The ECU will tell you what's happening NOW....need to log it to show trends. Besides gas mileage I also log repairs and costs for things like Oil and filters when I do an oil change or brake pads when I do a brake job...or for big jobs when I need to take it to a mechanic.

15 AWD, 16k miles, I consistently get under 14 mpg on my awesome 13 mile (roundtrip) commute in stop n go traffic with 14 traffic lights. As everyone else has said, on the highway if I keep it at 65 - 70 mph I get around 25 mpg, if I'm in a hurry going 75 - 80, which is almost always, that drops to 22 mpg. Just got back from a trip with a roof box and 500 lbs of people, mostly highway, and got around 20 mpg.
I did buy the HL over other choices partially for the mpg's. I had an Xterra getting 17 highway, 13 city and needed something better. I wanted to go bigger SUV (I always feel like I need more space) but my wife nixed that. If my budget could've covered a Sequoia, I would've convinced her we needed it.
