Alternative to gasket sealers (that leak anyway)

I've used this stuff on paper and fiber gaskets for years, and think the DIY crowd here might like it.

Hylomar Blue

It's a non-hardening gasket "dressing" as opposed to a "sealant". Works like so:

Clean the mating gasket surfaces with alcohol, acetone, or disc brake cleaner. Anything that's not oily.

Apply the dressing to both gasket surface. Don't get slap happy with the stuff!

Put the gasket on.

Install your fasteners. Tighten as you normally would.

You may or may not have gotten a little over enthusiastic applying the sealer. It's going to be alright; just wipe the excess off with a shop rag, your t-shirt, whatever. Comes right off. It's also oil soluble and 99% will stay in the oil filter when and if it gets there as it doesn't stick to metal unless there's a gasket involved.
