here is my problem. I am looking to buy a tacoma. i was looking for a 1997 to 1999 4x4 extended cab tacoma. every one i find has 120000 miles or more on it. none of these i find have had the timing belts done. so my problem is these trucks are 8500$and up. to do a timing belt with waterpump is around 700-800$. also with this many miles i noticed when i test drive these most of the clutches seem to be releasing at the top, which would mean worn clutch. a clutch cost 1000$. so these trucks which are 8500 are now 10500. should i be looking for a newer truck? what are your opinions?

I think you are smart for looking at the whole picture here. A 120K plus truck of any kind is going to have some arthritis. No matter how well kept it was... stuff does wear out. You probably should budget 1000 or so towards doing some immediate and necessary maintenance. Personally, I'd pay a little more and buy something newer if the finances permit. Something with 50K on it might just save you money in the long run.

If you look for a newer truck say 2-3 years it will cost you at least $10 - 12k with around the same of what your looking at. Year makes more diff. than mileage when it comes to price.

As for a rig with about 50k on it...Good luck, you'd be looking at around an '05 which would put you right around the $18 - 20k. I think it is the best option even as opposed to buying new, but it depends on what your willing to spend.

Oct '06 I was looking every where for an Ext Cab 4x4 for the amount I was willing to pay for. I had to up my anti to get what I wanted (kind of). I ended up with an '01 Ext Cab 4x4 V6 Auto SR5 with 91k miles. I replaced the shocks (4), O2 sensor, and the Idle speed sensor. In the spring it will be having its timing belt/wp done. I paid $12,500 for this truck, however I knew these things were going to need to be done.

The point is you will sink some cash into anything you buy used. If the price is good and you like the truck a $1k - 1.5k isn't too bad to get her in to shape. After all its a Toyota, we don't give them away and this is the reason why....Someone always willing to buy!
