V1 is by far the best choice. It may be expensive, but it's worth every penny. It can be "chatty", but it has 3 modes of sensitivity- so in the city you can just change modes and it will still pick up serious threats.

After several years of owning one, my only complaint is that it is big and heavy compared with other detectors.

But remember, no matter what radar detector you use, the only sure way to avoid a ticket is to not break the law in the first place.

Thanks for that link, how have you faired so far with it? I'm no racer, but I'm by an airport and these guys patrol in flocks, I've had enough tickets, being that i'm only 19 1/2
I've liked it a lot.
I had one of the old Escorts that Valentine designed that I bought back in 1984 or so.
Used it up til a couple of years ago when I got the Valentine One.

As to sensitivity, I'd rather have it too sensitive than not enough.
I don't mind false alarms enough to turn the sensitivity down.

One thing I really love on the Valentine One is that it picks up radar from front and back, and shows whether it's to your front, back, right or left side..

It also shows a count of how many radar sources it's picking up, and the arrow pointing to the one you should worry about blinks.

Yes, they are expensive, but they are great radar detectors.

It's already paid for itself many times over already.

It uses standard modular phone cord for power, so you can replace it easily, or go to your local store and get a color matching one for your car (if that matters to you).

It also has the remote readout, which i use mostly at night.
I put it down a little lower so it's out of sight behind me.
Police will sometimes power on their radar on the Interstate at night, and look for lights coming on in people's cars.

But that said, radar detctors are only tools, and you need to gain some experience in getting a feeling for what they're telling you.

BUT

In my experience, a lot of what helps you avoid tickets is being always alert, and paying attention to what's going on all around you, and not just what's in front of you.

I remember a guy I used to work with who got too many speeding tickets and had to go to "defnsive driving school" told me.
The teacher was a police officer, and was often telling people in the class, that if they had paid attention to what was going on all around them, they wouldn't have gotten caught speeding by the officer who casually drove up behind them. :)
In other words, he was trying to get across that it's the driving and not paying attention that's the real danger, not just going over the speed limit in and of itself

I have both the Valentine and the first of the GPS detectors, the Uniden GPS-RD.

In town I always drive the exact same few routes so I have all the false alarm locations programmed into it. Then I know that when it goes off it is a new signal or a signal with a different strength or frequency so I pay attention to it. But on the open hwy the Valentine is by far the better detector. Even the new Escort GPS detector works the same way. You have to press a button to program each false alarm into it, and then it remembers it the next time.

And I know that it works because there is a very sneaky LAPD motorcycle officer that hides in the trees at the edge of a shopping center. So if I get any alarm at that location I know that he is there. No alarm, no radar in use. I have about 90 locations programmed into my GPS-RD detector.

So, Valentine on the HWY and any GPS based radar detector in town (provided that you take the time to program it).

i have the v1 and its the best. some people think its annoying cause its very sensitive. but with some programming, its AWESOME!

others to consider:

passport x50
beltronics rx65
beltronics STi

STAY AWAY FROM COBRA!!! top end whistlers are okay...
Yes, the ones mentioned are the only ones worth it. But V1 and the X50 are about the same. Its a never ending debate as to which one is better. Having had experience with both, its hard to say which is better. It boiled down to the price which favored the Escort.

Bel Pro Rx65. Top contender. Not too sensitive in the city, and get this, it picked up laser "splash" from a couple cars ahead of me, enough time to slow down! This is a huge bonus, as laser's beam-width is very narrow even at a couple hundred feet. Be VERY careful if the cops use laser around your area -- nothing, (even the V1) will effectively protect you. It's hard for a detector to pick up on the minute amount of leftover laser after it hits its intended target.
Oh, and photo radar....good luck with that. Get some of that license plate spray that makes your plate un-readable in the pics.

Valentine One......
The RX65 or STi from beltronics are great too BUT, there is nothing like having the arrows on the V1. It is amazing once you use it you'll know it.....I even took it with me when I went on vacations.....I love it.
Get the V1. you could return in in 30days if you don't like it.
